  • Manitoba Mom fined for not putting grains in her child's lunch

It is bizarre. The link below will lead to one of many references.

Sun News : Manitoba mom fined $10 for lack of grains in kids' lunch

I saw this on FB. Shocking that Manitoba feels they have the right to enforce such backward guidelines and to intervene in a parental-child relationship this way. Not to mention that they are poisoning her child. I'd take my kid out of school. Absolutely outrageous.

So, a kid shoes up with a lunch of roast beef, carrots and potatoes... outrage! Give her chemical laiden bread and deli meats sandwich instead with a few wilted lettuce leaves and an anemic tomato slice! Now, that's a good lunch.

Apparently, the child care facility now provides hot lunch, as to avoid these issues with parents. Of course, I wouldn't necessarily trust that, myself.

Work-around: raw crackers/breads made from seeds. I bought some today, but I'm planning on making some later. I'll just use the lowest setting on my oven, since I don't have a dehydrator. Same diff, really, IMO.

Anyway, people see crackers. They don't quesiton whether or not it's grains.

Interesting side note: this mom was on the daycare board that made the decision to fine parents of kids sent to school with unbalanced meals.

It is important to note that while it is law in Ontario and Manitoba, there are provisions for those who have kids with allergies, eat gluten free, etc. Yeah, it is ridiculous and makes crazy news... But if a Manitoba or Ontario parent has issue with this, they simply have to address it with the care facility. There's a process for it.

I assumed that there would be.

We talked with the school yesterday and they said that they are "nut free" for the child care and kindy ages. I asked if that meant that we cannot send nuts or things with nuts in them in the lunches (since we provide lunches, they provide snacks). She said taht she didn't know, so I'm going to ask again today at the next meeting (this is the 4th meeting to get this kid into the school).

I play the allergy card at my kids pre-school, which is state run. I told them on day one that he was not allowed anything that was not packed in his lunch.
