  • Paleo wound care?

Hi all. I had a bad fall today. Tripped and landed on my knee (then my face). Now I have a massively swollen knee and shin area. I've been to the doctor who said the usual (elevate, apply ice, take Tylenol). Wondering if anyone know of anything in particular I should do/eat/consume/apply that would speed healing?

p.s.-- I didn't break the skin, so no blood. Thank goodness, as I probably would have passed out. As it was I was pretty shaken by the surprise fall. Just swelling and big ole bruise a'formin'.

I would put some Arnica cream on the swollen area as soon as possible...it'll lessen the bruising. Who knows if it's primal or not (it is a plant, so not entirely out of left field) but it works.

I don't know how long you have been Primal, but twice in the last few months I have banged myself really hard. Last time I was going too quickly up escalator stairs and really hurt myself, my shin was punctured and the whole thing was massively swollen, I was expecting massive bruising next day and it never happened, it healed so quickly I couldn't believe it. Hopefully you will find the same. I just soaked it for a few minutes in dilute Dettol and that was that.
Started Primal June 2012 at 148.5lbs, and 5' 1", reached goal weight in 5 months.
Lowest weight 93lbs - too thin. Now stable at around 100lbs much better weight for me at my age.
Primal, minus eggs, dairy and a myriad of other allergens.

Primal means never going to the doctor.

I don't know whether it was Mark or not, but i read something about not putting ice on swollen injuries.

You're just fighting the body's natural response, which does seem odd when you think about it, especially from the perspective of a primal individual

Yup, you die out in the woods like a MAN when you break a leg!

Take plenty of Tincture of Time.... elevate, which means lay on your back and rest (How much more Primal can you get?)... Alternate between ice and moist heat (do more of whichever feels better)... and if you want to get "herbal" try some willow bark tea, (as willow bark is one source of aspirin)..... I'm not sure why you think the doctors advice wasn't "Primal" enough....

I would also recommend bone broth, which seems to be the cure for everything, including death. LOL

Icing is just to limit the amount of fluids that get there and to limit the pain. However limiting the fluids means also limiting the amount of healing materials getting there... in any care, icing only helps if you do it immediately to prevent swelling.

Dinohunter & Mr. Anthony, you guts are brutal!!!!! (shakes head in shock)... you wouldn't let a tribe member die just because of a slight injury, now would you???...

Anyway, NewBerryCatcher, keep you leg elevated most of the time, give it rest but don't forget to carefully use you leg. Too much resting is bad for it as well. There are natural creams available that will reduce the swelling I'm just not sure what they are named other than in Holland

                        Bang on

Ice is not needed. After a sprain or knock the most important things to do are... Compression, rest / immobilisation and elevation above the heart.
