  • Blood test: high LDL, does it matter?

    Just got my blood work back, my doctor was not happy. I checked multiple MDA posts and it seems LDL doesn't really matter, only HDL and Trigs do. Feedback would be great.


    Total cholesterol: 298
    HDL: 64
    Non HDL: 234
    LDL: 225
    VLDL: 9
    Trig's: 46

    I saw this calc on one post:
    Total/HDL=4.6 Ideal: 5 or below
    Trig/HDL=0.7 Ideal: 2 or below
    LDL/HDL=3.5 Ideal: 4.3 or below

    Still trying to break the CW state of mind on this.

    Mine looked like that last time, and it's a tad worrisome to me. I pegged it on the coconut oil, that seems to elevate LDL in many people. Even if it means nothing, I don't want to have to pay more for insurance, so I've gotten rid of coconut oil and replaced it with tallow.

      How much coconut oil were you consuming daily when your LDL was "high"? I cook with coconut oil or ghee. I know some people like to add coconut oil to shakes, supplement with tablespoons, or eat coconut mana/butter. Too much makes my stomach queezy.

      People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.

        Do you think MCT oil would act on LDL like coconut oil?

          I don't know whether or not pure MCT will raise LDL.

          I was consuming only about a tbsp. of coconut oil per day, usually absorbed by eggs.

          Exercising more is supposed to lower LDL, too.

            I use about two tablespoons a day with my eggs. I'll cut it out and test again in a couple of months. Prior to going primal my cholesterol was "perfect" in CW terms, but my Trig's were at 151. At that point I consumes no coconut and MCT.

              I've bolded the relevant bit. Your LDL is nothing to worry about.
              Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

                  Yes that is true

                  Just for comparison here are my numbers

                  Cholesterol 284 <=200
                  Triglycerides 48 <=150
                  HDL Cholesterol 81 >=40
                  LDL 179 <=100
                  Chol/HDL Ratio 3.5 1.5-4.0
                  Non-HDL Cholesterol 203 <=130

                  I was eating a tbsp of coconut oil pretty often and a lb of 85/15 grass fed ground beef often as well. I decided to lower my LDL a little bit by cutting out coconut oil. We will see in a few months how my labs change

                    I can't believe we got to post #9 without anyone mentioning that the LDL is only a guesstimate. The 225 LDL number was created using the formula Total - (HDL + [Trigs/5]) = LDL but the problem is that the math starts to fail once trigs drop below 100.

                    Using the Iranian equation [(Total/1.19) + (Trig/1.9) - (HDL/1.1) -38 = LDL] your LDL comes out as 178.45.

                      I read through Griff's post, excellent information. Using the Iranian equation for LDL my ratio's are even better.
