Reminds me of the time I asked my vegan housemate about bivalves and wished I hadn't.

Pigs are smarter than dogs, aren't they?

      Shame they're so delicious.

Its nothing else than a mechanism of psychological self defense, a way to believe cruelty is ok, because that other one is inferior, at a level of an object. And schock when we discover that its not so.
        P.S. still eating meat.
I've never had a plant communicate with me ... on the other hand it might be more intelligent than most internet posts.

I could feel a deep ANGST from the large raw carrot that I ate alive yesterday! It was like a silent scream filled the room, so I skipped the raw Broccoli that seemed to beg for its life…

I guess what we do to them is pretty macabre. Peeling, grating, steaming...

Just because a farmer inhaled too much round-up, got really high, and thought he heard his crops speaking to him, doesn't mean they feel pain. Please, explain how an unconscious organism can feel pain though with absence of any sort of pain receptors.

Oh, and chickens might be the dumbest animal alive.

All living entities have essence or spirit, whether one chooses to equate those to a soul or consciousness, that's another thing.

I'm sure they would still react to being tormented, eaten, etc; unless they're brain dead, and in all fairness, basically dead anyway, same as a plant.

Bad example. You cannot in any way prove that a plant feels pain, merely that it's there, and for all intents and purposes sort of alive in an atypical sense.

This topic is intended to be inflammatory and I don't know why ppl feel the need to get involved with it.

I've had both, the chickens are a lot smarter but that's not saying much.

There's a difference between a conscious living creature with a vast decision space, and a plant that at most reacts to it's environment.

Ironically nowdays we cultivate these animals for mass production, as if they were plants. You can rationalize this any way you want, but in this day and age it is unnecessary and you don't have to be vegan to realize this.
