  • My mom's cholesterol panel

    Hi all,

My mom (age 58) just had a physical and her doctor wants her on statins stat.

    Total: ~280
    LDL: ~210
    HDL: ~70
    Triglycerides: ~60

Can anyone direct me to research to give my mom (and her doctor) on this topic? The good news is that she does NOT want to take statins. Should I tell her to get them to do the NMR panel to check for particle size?

    Thanks!

First up, read the primer in my sig (which spans the first two posts of that thread). What matters are the RATIOS relative to HDL.

From your mum's panel, that is
    Total/HDL = 4 (ideally < 5)
    LDL/HDL = 3 (ideally <4.3)
    Trigs/HDL = 0.86 (ideally < 2)

So as you can see, ALL of her ratios are in the good range, because her HDL is so good. I believe that her doctor is wrong to recommend a statin here.

You should easily be able to find the many studies that show statins do not help females in any way and that total cholesterol being higher is positively correlated with health for women.

        Also basically true.

Cholesterol will naturally rise as people get older, particularly in women and is protective.
The other point is there is no study done on statins that shows any benefit to women and hence the prescription of statins to women has no evidence base even in the CW realm.
I found a paper discussing the legal ramifications of advertising Lipitor for women without an evidence base to support the claims made.
