  • What to blend?

I want to start incorporating smoothies into my day, as I typically eat little in the mornings and think they would be a good way to get some good stuff early on. So far I have frozen unsweetened berries (strawberries and mixed berries) and whey isolate. I'm going to pick up my blender soon and will stop by Trader Joe's or somewhere on the way back. What's a good liquid for a healthy smoothie? Cream? Coconut Milk? Water? Grain Alcohol? I'd like to really pack a nutritional punch into these, so I'd appreciate suggestions.

    I vote for Maker's Mark.

Coconut milk would be my top choice. You could add water, too, if that's just too much fat for you early in the day. On the other hand, some people increase the fat by adding a couple teaspoons of coconut oil.

      Some of my favorite smoothies:

Chocolate whey + frozen cherries + cocoa powder (for dark chocolate flavor) + coconut milk
Vanilla whey + frozen mango + coconut milk
Vanilla whey + frozen apples + apple pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice) + coconut milk
Chocolate whey + frozen banana + cocoa powder (for dark chocolate flavor) + coconut milk

Frozen carrots with vanilla whey is also quite tasty. I did a random smoothie for dinner the other night. Coconut milk, raw carrots, raw spinach and a whole cucumber. Pretty tasty.

Another option is almond milk. I use 3/4 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup coconut milk, 2 tbsp 100% cocoa and 2 scoops unsweetened protein powder. Makes for a nice dark chocolate shake.

So far, coconut milk for the base in my smoothies is the best.

I like unsweetened almond milk most of the time...

with spinach/kale, frozen blueberries, whey isolate or egg white protein

Oh, I am already quite familiar with will it blend.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I just got some coconut milk (had to go to whole foods, TJ's only had low fat for some reason) and coconut butter. Cup of the milk, spoon of the butter, cup of frozen mixed berries and a scoop of whey isolate. This tastes just like candy, and the idea that it's actually good for me is amazing. I will experiment soon with adding other fruits and veggies to the mix.

Low-fat is all they ever carry, for some reason.

Just drank it and it was delicious. I cannot wait to begin my day more often with a big dose of fat and protein and antioxidants like this. It seems like the perfect food...
