  • Just ordered 1/4 grassfed cow - so excited!!!

I just put a deposit on a 1/4 of a grassfed cow to be delivered in less than a month. I'm SO excited. Between the 1/3 pig we have in the freezer now and the cow, we'll be STOCKED. A year ago, I never would have guessed I'd be so excited about meat

It's coming from HERE. They are in TN but are just starting bulk runs for big orders a few times a year to Atlanta. They're trying to start a meat CSA for Atlanta too if they can get enough interest.

Fantastic! Not just grass-fed but LOCAL, and you can be part of helping them start a CSA!

Winning all round. Enjoy your round, your chuck, your ground, your ribs (yum, ribs), your brisket, your 7-bone steak, your .......your ....... your .......

And did you think to ask for the organ meats like liver and heart? When I get lamb, I get all the organ meats from other people's lambs, too, because they don't want them. If your provider knows you want them, they might set some aside for you now and then.

                  Congrats!

Sort of a long term goal for me, buying healthy animals straight from the source. What could be better? Hope to have a freezer full of grass fed beef, pork, lamb - sounds amazing.

                  Browsing for freezers in 3,2,1...

I'm about to buy my first grass-fed beef. Just going with the ground at first, because it's cheaper. Averages out to $5.25 per pound for 100% grass-fed from a local farm. Is this a decent price? I live in Iowa BTW.

I just had 1/4 processed and am waiting on delivery (here in Texas) and it was $3.50 per lb. Lots of roasts 20 lbs ground and got some ribs I didn't want. However, price is plenty low for local grass fed!

I recently bought a 1/4 cow, and it worked out to about $4.60 per pound. It's a LOT of meat - about three beer boxes worth. We have three freezers and I wasn't sure we'd get it all in!

I know I don't have enough freezer space for 1/4 cow (I just have a standard fridge+freezer), but how much space does that much meat take up? I'd like to get a ballpark figure for how much meat I could store in my puny freezer, haha.

Three beer boxes - the size a case of beer comes in. We have an old upright freezer, a small chest freezer, plus the freezer in our fridge. They were already pretty full, so it was quite a challenge fitting everything in. Here is just a small portion of it:

That looks so awesome. Approximately how many pounds is 1/4 of a cow? I contacted a local NJ farm but haven't received an e-mail back yet. I'm going to call them I guess. They don't deliver so it would be about a 70 mile drive. I don't think I have that much freezer space, should I even bother?
I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.
