  • MSG free sources of sodium

    Hi,
    I'm trying to add 2-4 grams of sodium a day to compensate for water loss due to low carb intake. The easiest way is to drink 2 chicken bullion cubes a day.

    I've been finding a lot of disturbing information about MSG and all the different names used to hide presence of MSG in the food.

    Anyone know of a source of sodium that is MSG free?
    Is making my own bone broth the only solution?

      But short of scarfing down 2 grams of salt twice a day, is there an other food source?

      I am cycling 2+ hours 3Xweek.

      It is essential to maintain intravascular fluid volume while cycling. Lacking carbs predisposes your body to off load fluid.
      So the question-where to find food sources safely high in good old sodium?

        It would be much easier and safer to just eat the amount of carbs needed. Also soy sauce.

          Soy sauce stupid with msg.
          Why would I need carbs if I'm keto-adapted?
          Got all the fuel I need. Just have to aware of the intravascular fluid issue.

            Load empty caplets with salt.
            You can buy the empty caps quite easily on Amazon or some such.

            Or simply look for bullion cubes that state "MSG free" on the package. They do exist.

              Only cheap soy sauce has msg, buy quality.

              You will need carbs for 2+ hour bike rides unless you intend on riding flat streets at 5mph.

                  We need to be careful of the 'msg free' labels. There are over 100 different names for the same process.

                  "Processed free glutamic acid (MSG) is created when protein is either partially or fully broken apart into its constituent amino acids, or glutamic acid is secreted from selected bacteria. A protein can be broken into its constituent amino acids in a number of ways (autolysis, hydrolysis, enzymolysis, and/or fermentation"

                      Glutamates are a product of fermentation in producing any quality soy sauce.

                      I paddle on the ocean for 3-4 hours, some at rest while fishing, without ever bonking. Carb intake is easily less than 100g per day. Racing would be a different matter, but keeping the activity aerobic just isn't a problem

                        I figured he was talking about added MSG.

                        Yes, low intensity, long distance cardio is perfect if you wan to burn fat. If that is the type of bike riding he is doing, i suppose he will be fine.
