  • Insulin resistance + primal

So following on from my thread this morning, i went to the Dr, and my blood sugar level was 8.4 (he said over 6.9 was high) this was 6 hours after only a BP coffee.

I am going back tomorrow for the fasting glucose test to get a definitive answer.

My question is that is this because of how I treated my body in the past? Binge/high carb/low fat/losing weight cycle, even though I have had 4 months straight primal no cheats?

Surely a lack of sugar doesn't cause this?

Yeah, metabolic syndrome from diet takes years to develop in most cases. And it would be rather extraordinary to reverse it in only four months.

Some of this post isn't about your situation, but I think there is some relevant stuff on insulin resistance in it anyhow:

    Paleo Diet, Inflammation and Metformin

      Thanks that makes sense.
I am yet to research metformin, but this is what the Dr said he would put me on if glucose test is high.

I am unsure about taking this just yet, but I imagine eating a primal diet without the medication would take a long time to reverse this?

Surely the medication is a temporary fix anyway?

he seemed to agree that continuing down the low carb path was the way to go

Yes, it is absolutely from a low carb diet.

Look at all the threads popping up with low carb and a mass amount of different ailments. Low carb, low calorie is not healthy, period.

Low carb also had a big hand in your diet/binging cycles as well. And yes.

I never ever did low carb till I discovered primal so please explain?
6 months lowish carb 2011-2012 then huge amounts of carbs/SAD food.
The just primal with plenty of veg Oct 2012-jan 2013
I've only restricted my carbs 0-20 g per day since 1/1/13, mostly 0.

So you think I've done that damage in such a short time?

Im sure low calories/starvation was the other reason.

^Was gonna say something like that.

Ayla, seriously: you don't eat enough. Below your BMR is generally a bad idea. You'll just screw your metabolism up in the long term.

Ayla, Zach is a troll. Low carb did not cause it. Years of higher carb did it. Low carb actually tends to reverse it. And EAT MORE!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, steak in one hand, chocolate in the other, yelling "Holy F***, What a Ride!"

Low carb is not an issue assuming you are eating plenty of veg. The body needs some glucose but the body functions fins on ketones.
Keep in mind high carb/high grain = high sugar.
Eating primal is not a diet, it is a way of life.

So you suggest I make myself eat even when not hungry?
This is not something I want to do as a former binger

Low carb is not an issue assuming you are eating plenty of veg and getting plenty of calories. The body needs some glucose but the body functions fine on ketones AND can easily create all the glucose it needs.

                              Sorry about the double post.
But as others have said best to ignore zach
