    Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could nudge me in the right direction. I've got some gut issues going on which can generally be somewhat controlled by eating a clean paleo diet (no dairy either) but i've still got pain when I press my gut, as well as low energy levels, low motivation, bad spotty skin where the scars from old spots aren't healing, as well as a scar on my knee from the summer that still hasn't healed, so my body doesn't seem to be healing itself at all. I've recently discovered that FODMAP foods irriate my gut, as well as nuts, all fruit, caffeine, and I think sweet potatoes too. I had candida last year and I am fairly certain that I still have some kind of gut pathogen. I am sensitive to carbohydrates (will easily fall into binge mode if I eat too many) but i'm having to eat more starchy veg as I can't eat FODMAP veg at the moment which is basically all leafy greens. I've heard that oregano oil can be good as a natural antibiotic? I also take L-glutamine to heal my gut lining and muscles after weight lifting and a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in water before meals as I have low stomach acid which seems to help. Could someone please give me some suggestions as to what I can do? I'm 19, at uni/stressed already with work, and this is stressing me out even more, which I know is counter productive!

      By sensitive to carbohydrates, do you mean they cause you gut discomfort or just that you binge? Whats a typical day of wating look like?

        Yes, oregano oil can help with fungus issues and bacterial overgrowth. I have used it with success for yeast symptoms, but I still have gut problems (constipation) after a long period of what seemed like candida overgrowth.

          If I eat too many carbs I get an immediate energy slump (I do not even feel a energy rise first- I had severe adrenal issues last year, and probably still do) I find i'm ok with starchy foods but all sugary foods, which I no longer eat any more, and sweet potatoes cause gut irritation and can sometimes set me into binge mode.

          A normal day:
          B: Home made GF beef burger(s) sometimes made with pork or lamb mince and sometimes with bacon
          L: Mackerel with some lettuce and cucumber, sometimes a banana but i've seen that these give me slight stomach cramp so i've cut these out
          D: Lately i've been making lots of casseroles in my slow cooker- the meat is always good quality (local grass fed etc) always with some kind of starchy veg- swede, carrot and sometimes some kale

          I weightlift 3x a week, sometimes go climbing and walk or cycle every day.

              I took oregano oil and grapefruit seed extract as well as a probiotic in the form of a tablet but I was treated for candida before I discovered paleo and the practitioners just told me to cut out sugar and yeast, I was still eating wheat and I think dairy too, which I can't tolerate, so my gut never really healed and i've had major problems with it since then. This was over a year ago now. My bowel movements are luckily always normal, however (turn away- TMI coming up!) I do often see candida in the toilet after but in the last few months i've been telling myself that its just dying off. However i'm just not feeling any better!

                I'm not sure what all of your issues are caused by, but if you have problems with your gut flora, trying (1) taking a probiotic supplement (Garden of Life is supposed to be a good brand) and (2) eat more fermented foods. Mercola believes that eating high quality fermented foods is better than taking probiotics. This article explains how to make your own fermented veggies. How to Turn Ordinary Vegetables into Superfoods I would love to do that but have been too lazy to actually do it.

                  I'd be happy to go to a FM doc, i'm not sure how to find one though, and as a student I have very little money at the moment. However for the right information i'd be happy to pay it as i'm sick of feeling like this now! I'm in the UK so I have no idea how to find a good one. I do see a kinesiologist every month as she has really helped with everything else, I just still have gut irritation and I don't think she specialises in that. She's not paleo orientated in her nutrition advice I believe.

                    Cinnamon is a great anti-fungal/bacterial as well. Take two or three whole cinnamon sticks, boil in water until water turns a brigh orangish-red color, drink resultant liquid. Actually tastes pretty damn good and is great for blood sugar regulation as well I've read!

                    Also, thirding the GAPS protocol at least until things calm down.

                      Thanks for the advice serenity! I do make my own sauerkraut but have been unable to eat it as cabbage irritates my gut. I have seen people making fermented carrots so I will try that. Probiotics are so expensive so if I can get the same bacteria from homemade veg, i'd much rather do that.

                        I'm pretty much already doing a GAPS diet, except that i'm eating more starchy based veg as that's the only veg that's left after taking out FODMAP veg.

                          Well my advice will be against the grain of everyone here but if sugar (not starch) does not cause you discomfort then i suggest you completely overhaul your diet. Center it around fresh ripe (spotted yellow bananas) fruit, fruit veggies, coconut and use animal products sparingly. I would drop almost all fat except a bit from egg yolks, coconut, avocado and some from red meat/fish/seafood several times a week.

                          Stay away from pork, fowl, starch, grains, dairy (unless you can handle it then maybe some yogart/cheese) and added fats.

                          Im sure you will ignore this advice but i would bet that following it would not only alleviate your digestion issues but also adrenal fatigue, candida, any sleeping problems and inflammation.

                            Really this isn't so far off from the GAPS or SCD protocol Zach. Monosacharides as your carb source is the basis of the SCD. Here's a link that has the phases broken down better than about anywhere I have seen:

                            You will see that its a progression of adding in certain foods for healing.....I strongly recommend the 24hr yogurt and the bone broth along with egg yolks as soon as possible if you go this route though.

                              Really? I never checked them out because from the bits and pieces i read they seemed overly complicated and tedious. Just looking at your SCD link, that looks very decent.
