  • Diet Coke DETOX, worse than booze !

    Hey

Thought I would share my story, it may help someone.

I went primal only 3 weeks ago and instantly stopped drinking Diet Coke. For the past 5 years I have had at least 1.5L a day, but probably on average and 2.5L...I drank the stuff like water. 3 weeks ago I began to experience dizziness, sore throat and other symptoms which I initially put down to carb flu or actual flu!

The dizziness got really severe though, I would walk round and think I was going to stumble, lie down and still feel light-headed. I actually got concerned and went to my doctors after 2 weeks, they are doing bloods but my doc was puzzled as to what could be causing it.

This week I have slowly been getting better, and today I feel a big 'foggy' but nothing as bad as before. I was sitting last night and suddenly thought 'I've not had a diet coke for 3 weeks - go me' and it hit me. I have withdrawn from the stuff and I'm sure the dizziness and all that crap is linked!

Anyone else experienced this? 4 years ago I ditched the booze, and although part of my recovery was a 10 day Librium detox I still didn't suffer as much as coming off damn diet coke!

    Peace,
    Dx

I quit Diet Coke before and had the same thing happen. It's horrible. I would also get horrible headaches and had a very short fuse with anyone around me. All I wanted to do was sleep and be left alone. Unfortunately, I started drinking the stuff again. I started primal a couple weeks ago and I'm slowly weening myself off of it. I hope to be completely off of it by the end of next week. You sir are a trooper for going cold turkey. Diet Coke can really mess with you.

Ha, Thanks! Although If I'd had known this I'd have slowly weened myself off it as-well

Are you dropping all caffeine now, or just the diet coke?

So we need to unplug these dams, and make the the natural flow... It sort of freaks me out. We need to unplug the dams. You cannot stop the natural flow of thought with a cling and a clang..."

Nah, it's fine. I was just wondering if caffeine withdrawal might be the cause. But since you still have coffee then that is certainly not the cause. I'm glad I never got into the diet soda fad myself.

My daughter got into that habit for a while, at that level of consumption, and ended up with daily massive debilitating headaches. I did the Sherlock Holmes thing, concluded it was the diet Coke, and decided to do a cold-turkey withdrawal test before we went trooping off to the doc. Guess what disappeared, never to be felt again...

Worse than booze, but less withdrawal symptoms than meth and heroin I hope? I think itís probably the total amount of caffeine, especially if you also drink some coffee or tea in addition or perhaps chocolate? I drink around the same amount as you and I can feel the caffeine effect sometimes, especially when also drinking coffee and tea throughout the day. No plan for quitting here though, I plan to continue as a Diet Coke junkie to the bitter endÖ

oh man..I was ranking about 2-3 L of diet come a day too.finally droped it on 12/1/12 but it took almost a month for the withdrawal symptoms to go away...headaches,body aches, feel like you have a fever, overall bitchyness...it sucked.& even though I still want one some mornings,I feel a LOT better without them.you can do it...it just really really sucks for awhile. I def think it was harder to give up diet coke than the pack to two packs of cigs I was smoking a day...& that's saying something.

Just to see how "addicted" I am to various things, I have abstained from Diet Soda, carbs, wheat, coffee, all caffeine (including chocolate), and even meat at various times in my life.

Really, the only thing that ever really affects me is carb withdrawal. When I quit carbs, days 2-4 are brutal, then I'm great. I can quit caffeine, no prob. Diet soda? No big deal, no side effects. Wheat? I notice no difference with wheat or without.

Of course, we are all different, but I do allow myself a couple diet sodas a week for enjoyment. I only have them with meals now, to ensure my body is getting calories at the same time as I am getting the sweetness, which IMO eliminates the added hunger diet soda is theorized to give you after drinking.

This is very much how I feel when I DO drink that stuff. Aspartame is really bad stuff. I notice the cleaner my body is the more the feeling is pronounced. I actually feel like aspartame is about the most toxic thing you can buy at the grocery store.

Ha @Gorbag - Defo less than Heroin. (And booze without meds, which can be lethal obvs)

I'm relived to know I'm not the only one who has fallen into this trap, just glad I'm getting out. It's taken me 3 weeks to sort of feel normal, hopefully next week I will be fighting fit.

If I tried to drop the caffeine and dairy now aswell I'd probably just have to lock myself in a cage for a month
