It's not very healthy to continue to eat yourself into the grave either! Remember in this though experiment we are dealing with morbid obesity, softer metods has been tried out first and failed, this is the last resort so to say...

maybe it's the spirit of darwin flittering hither and yon among the population

one day it'll be the 800 lb man fused to his mattress, the next day it'll be the woman smoking while cleaning her oven with fume-heavy chemicals

Yeah well in Feb. 2012 I weighed 518 lbs so I guess I'm a perfect candidate for your experiment. Perhaps all of us sub-human morbidly obese people can complete Hunger Games style for that hunk of salami or a large pizza with everything. Perhaps the last morbidly obese man or woman standing can win themselves a life of luxury and a lap band or gastric bypass for their efforts. Maybe we should just make these reducing camps compulsory for everyone weighing over 400 lbs and let the obesity crisis sort itself out.

It just so happens that as of last week I've lost 195 lbs since February. I still have tons more to lose, I'm still morbidly obese, and I regret and am humiliated that I ever got to the size I was. I feel worse about it than anyone could ever make me feel by sticking me into a camp against my will.

There was no surgery, no armed guards, no forced starvation or calorie restriction except that which I imposed upon myself. What you're not getting in all your smug moral superiority is that you can put us in camps for one month, one year, or one decade, but unless you're going to keep us segregated into forced weight loss camps for the rest of our lives (which I'm sure would be just fine with most people out there who probably wish everyone morbidly obese would just hurry up and die already anyway) these camps will do nothing to cure obesity in the long term. Nothing anyone ever tried to do for me made one bit of difference until I made the decision to change my life. You are grossly underestimating the mental aspect of losing weight and maintaining weight loss. Even if your camp provides therapy morning noon and night you can't force anyone into any sort of rehab until and unless they're ready for it.

I think your idea is completely over-simplifying, crass, mocking, dehumanizing and marginalizing.

Yeah why not? If we start eating each other we can just call it "eat MOAR fat" and it'll be all good. The hell with the guards, we ate them already, they were too lean to do much with though.

Ya, Gorbag, this little "thought experiment" of yours does make you sound like a bit of a douche.

The joking around has been a gentle way of trying to tell you that. MuuMuu just made the point more eloquently.

BTW, way to go MuuMuu. 195 pounds is jaw dropping-ly impressive. The only other person around here I know of in that league would be Quelsen the Honey Badger.

                hi muumuu

this thread started out with me saying '.....what?'

                and has ended with sadness

gorbag, here is my opinion, put succinctly; it's a bad idea.

you cannot round up a group of people and lock them in a cage, guarded by men with guns. it's a Bad Thing.

history will tell you it's a Bad Thing

any action that begins with a declaration of 'it's for your own good' is generally a Bad Thing

Well, both you and bloodorchid and others are misunderstanding something here! This is a thought-experiment to see the practical consequence of doing what I outlined in my OP. This is what I am primarily interested in, less about the meta-ethical aspect whether it is morally right or not to carry out such an experiment. This is to discuss “AS IF”, - what would the practical results be by doing such a project?

If you like, we could also assume that the candidates voluntarily consented to be isolated for one year in such a camp! So the question is; What would happen to the candidates throughout the year, and what would the final result be for the 100 persons that started out as morbidly obese when leaving the camp? I am not interested what would happen after they have left either, just the finishing result!

And it is not meant as any disrespect for obese people whatsoever, just to make this clear once and for all...

Substitute "gay" or "black" or "disabled" in your thought experiment and you might understand why it's offensive.

What if we took some musclebound young men, locked them away for a year with no mirrors, no weights, no egg whites, no oil or razors, and left them with enough food to sustain them but no entertainment except great works of literature. Do you think they'd develop some compassion and/or empathy?
