  • Pre/Probiotics

    So my group b strep test for pregnancy came back positive and they'll need to put me on antibiotics during birth. I'm just wondering if I should start taking pre & probiotics now, with 3 weeks left before the IV, or wait until I'm closer. How much should I have each day? I'm thinking of re-incorporating raw milk back into my diet (I buy it for my 4yo now), along with more Greek yogurt, and the occasional kefir smoothie. I also have access to other supplements thanks to my chiropractor and essential oils.

    probiotics are always a good idea. i can't really say how much, but i know it's pretty tough to overdo it. kefir and yogurt are good; kombucha and kimchi are too. and, of course, getting some dirt in there would really help.
    if it were me, i would probably try for at least one pre/probiotic source from food each day, and supplement in capsule form on the side.

      I've heard that, since it's the baby's first encounter with bacteria, the quality of the bacteria in the birth canal is crucial to their health. I've even heard theories that this part going wrong can have an impact on allergies.

        Forgot about booch! Got any suggestions for a brand without too much zing to it? I've had it before, but it takes me a while to get through a bottle b/c it's pretty strong.

          i'm partial to GT's gingerade...it tastes how i expect ginger ale to taste. that's my go-to bottle when i'm not making my own.

              Tried the GT Gingerade. It's mild compared to some of the other booches I've had, but it tastes nothing like gingerale. It tastes like ACV. Good thing I like Bragg's flavored ACV drinks!
              Gonna try some of the other GT flavors-- a berry one sounds good.
              Also I was really pleased at how low carb it was (14g for the whole bottle)

                In my opinion, fermented veggies will always win over taking probiotic pills. Why? Because with the fermented veggies you are not only consuming your probiotics in the form of a tasty vessel, but you get the nutrition in the vegetable as well (plus probiotic strains add some vitamins to the veggie), and any fiber obtained from the vegetables are also pretty much a PREbiotic as well.

                  I try to get my probiotics from food whenever possible (which is why I was asking about booch & kefir), and the prebiotic I was mentioning from my chiro initially is Theralac (a powder), which I would then mix into food.

                  If you would have any other food-biotic suggestions, feel free to make them
