  • Best food to break a 2 day fast?

So, I've tried something new. I am almost half way through my second day of a two day fast. The idea of intermittent fasting makes much sense to me(food wasn't always available 24/7 as it is now) and I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could accomplish it. One thing I've learned is that being hungry is OKAY. Before going Primal, I would get extremely hungry and shaky if I did not eat 6 times a day. It was horrible and miserable to literally have to carry snacks with me wherever I go "just in case". It is a huge accomplishment for me to even go a meal without eating, let alone 2 days.

My question is, what is the best way of breaking a 2 day fast? I have done some searches and I have come up with everything from "do not break your fast with fat and protein" to "fat and protein is the best way to break your fast". So...I'm wondering what the Primal community's stance is on the correct foods to break a fast? I was thinking maybe 1-2 soft boiled eggs, since I believe eggs are easy to digest.

Any certain foods that are best to breaking a fast?

something small and light will probably be best...soft boiled eggs are a good idea. i used to break my 36 hour fasts with a pretty decent sized omelet because i though eggs would be best too, but now i think anything would work just fine. i do think smaller is better. you might be ravenous a couple hours after that, but focus on starting off small so you don't make yourself uncomfortable with a big meal.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll definitely stick to something small because I don't want to upset my stomach at all. This is my first longer-ish fast, so I'm sort of just winging it.

It doesn't matter, eat whatever you want.

Thanks! Surprisingly, it's not as bad as I thought. At first I was a bit hungry, but it was easier to manage because it wasn't the "shaky" type of hungry. Before going Primal, I was always shaky when I got hungry. Now that I'm Primal, I have found that I can actually be hungry and be able to tolerate it without feeling like I am going to faint!

I'm a student in college and I have been able to get through my classes, study, and take 2 tests without eating. Also, I work at a martial arts school and I was able to get through working out without eating. I am hungry, but as I said I am able to deal with it. I will break my fast tomorrow though because I am not sure that I'll be able to go more than 2 days without eating!

I am not sure that I would want to do this. If I would eat ANYTHING I wanted, it certainly wouldn't be primal I tend to have occasional stomach upset, and so I am a bit cautious against eating anything I want, even if what I want is Primal.

I have a nice slab of fatty beef. That's just me though.

                Bacon.....

In all seriousness 48hrs is a good short term fast, but is not nearly long enough to have to worry about slowly reintroducing solids (including fats or proteins)....so I would just suggest a healthy primal meal. Maybe some liver and onions with a salad or other vegetables.

BACON! I'd totally attack a frittata with some bleu cheese and salsa

Wow, 48 hour fast?!? My longest intermittent fast was 24 hours. I broke the 24 hour fast with steak, crab and broccoli with a sweet potato. I don't remember what I had first. To be honest it was probably a few sips of wine while I was cooking. In that Gandhi movie he broke his really really long fast with water and lemon juice.

Uh, well eat something that you know won't upset your stomach; only you know what that is. My main point was there is no special food to eat after a fast. Just eat a normal meal...

Um. Eat food. Does it really matter as long as you're eating healthy whole foods?

on the rare occasions i had the forced 24-48 hour fast (yeah, I mean gastro), i never ever listened to the advice to eat white bread or rice or something light like that. I always wanted, and ate, meat

don't think i'd voluntarily fast for that long, food is too yummy
