Thanksgiving! What's your plan?

    My family doesn't do Thanksgiving and holidays. I've never had a Thanksgiving or holiday dinner in my life. I'm going to hit the gym early before it closes for the day, then spend the rest of the Thanksgiving sleeping/reading books/eating my usual dinner.

      Yeah, I'll probably eat anything and everything on the fourth Thursday and count it against my 20% (which for me is generally only 10% anyway, so what the hell).

        We always have a veggie platter to munch on up until dinner (even pre-primal), but last year we discovered some killer paleo stuffing, and this year I'm going to have it with roast root vegetables from everyday paleo, and parsnip turnip mash from make it paleo (or is it paleo comfort foods? I forget). Dessert may be gluten free pies, cuz the men folk want it or my favorite: dates stuffed with mascarpone and candied pecans. Hubby typically cooks the Thanksgiving meal. I buy the groceries. Don't try to come between the man and his bird. He gets cranky. I'm allowed to take care of the desserts & side dishes

            I'm going to buy or make a gluten-free breakfast bread to eat with cream cheese (like banana bread) so I can partake in our breakfast tradition without eating cinnamon rolls. I'll probably eat mashed white potatoes, if they are available. I might make a veggie-side of some kind. I'm making my own pie to share. Other than that, it should all be primal friendly (turkey & veggies) so I'm really not worried.

                This will be the 12th Thanksgiving I've cooked. My goal is to emphasize more Primal-friendly dishes while not shitting myself if I eat a slice of pie or something. So, a compromise approach. Tentative menu for the buffet:

                Appetizers: oysters Rockefeller (a tradition, everyone loves them), deviled eggs, stuffed mushroom caps

                Buffet: sausage-stuffed turkey roulade, ham (MiL is bringing), grilled salmon, mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy, roasted Brussels sprouts, stuffing cups, glazed carrots, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, croissants

                Dessert: rosemary bourbon sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie with gingersnap crust, cheesecake (mom's)

                So there are plenty of Primal options (or mostly-Primal). The desserts, obviously not. Croissants and stuffing, not. The amount of sugar to glaze the carrots or added to the cran will be minimal. Everyone can navigate this according to what suits diet and tastes. We keep the door open for friends and neighbors who don't have anywhere to go, and it's usually a good mix.

                  I don't do the faux replacement foods. Way too much trouble and just confuses people, I find. Easier for me, also, simply to stay consistent.

                  Frankly though I have always been the person who wanted to carve the turkey because that means I can fill up on delicious crispy skin and drippings before we even start dinner. So going primal just means now I know why those parts are so good and I put it on my plate instead of nibbling as I go along.

                  I also have gotten into the habit of bringing a ridiculously luscious paté to share. Macadamia nuts, dark chocolate, and/or cream if I feel like a treat.

                      Okay, so I rolled my eyes when I read paleo stuffing. I am not a fan of lame substitutions. Then I read the recipe. Oh yeah, that is so getting made. Darn you for crushing my preconceived notions. Uh, I mean thank you

                      As for me the menu will be turkey, many veggie sides - braised onions, fennel gratin, roasted brussel sprouts, etc and this paleo stuffing Dr. BB just mentioned. We're skipping the starches and such this year I think.

                          The plan is:

                          PIE!

                          Every kind of pie. Apple, cherry, black and blue, rhubarb custard, pumpkin, pecan, Ohio Shaker lemon, French silk, peach, pecan, strawberry-rhubarb, apple-cranberry ,mince, boysenberry, Jefferson Davis.

                          It's Thanksgiving!

                            Wifey and I will be celebrating with ya'll 'MURICANS as we always do with her fam in Michigan.

                            I'm going to eat as clean as possible for dinner, but I probably WILL eat pumpkin pie, dairy/gluten/egg intolerances be damned.

                            Oh, and red wine.

                              I thought the whole point of paleo/primal eating was to move away from the SAD foods we used to eat? Meatzza is fine, but I'm not sold on eating baked goods made with a shit ton of almond flour, tons of dates, or cashews, a crap ton of honey, etc. Frankenfoods, I say.

                              Once in a blue moon is fine, but I'm weary of sites who post their recipes for that stuff ALL THE TIME. The perception is that stuff is ALL WE EAT.

                              I'm proud of my clean food blog, dammit.
