  • slow to heal spots, scratches and scars

    I have several spots and scratches that are taking much longer to heal than normal. I've been Primal for a year now, and have noticed that this seems to be an effect of eating this way.

    Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be the case?

    Is it because inflammation is so low on a Primal diet ? (though I suppose this would make the healing process speed up faster?)

    Confused.

    I've wondered this as well. My wounds take longer to heal as well. I do happen to have a bleeding disorder (Von Willebrands), but it seems to me I bruise more easily and take longer to heal since I started Primal in January.

        Ghee (applied topically) has been my miracle healer. I haven't noticed anything taking longer to heal than usual on my own since switching to Primal, but applying that speeds up the healing process for me and minimizes scarring.

            I've noticed the reverse for minor injuries, so I would assume that means something else is going on with your system.

              I haven't noticed any change in this department. I've always healed cuts and bruises very quickly. Only exception has been a wipeout when I was running back in June and ripped a few layers of dermis from the knee, still have the mark there, taking a while to go away.

              I can't imagine why healing processes would be slower eating Primally.

                I also have noticed that small cuts and scratches are a little slower to heal since going primal, but I have absolutely no idea why. I'm getting all the vitamins I need, as far as I know.

                  Check for deficiencies in b1. It's one nutrient people can come up a little short. It isn't very widespread in foods besides wholegrains, pork and sunflower seeds.

                    There actually could be *a lot* of causes for this.

                    For DH (who has the issue currently), his naturopath noted that it's a combination of his gut-healing process and mineral deficiency (in particular, zinc). As the over-grown bacterial colonies and parasites are dying off and the gut flora is changing back to healthy, the body is dealing with a lot of toxins that come from the bacteria as they are alive (which causes gaps), as well as when they are drying off. So, the immune system is functioning to heal that, and as such, wound healing slows down a fair bit.

                    So, the causes could be varied -- and related to diet if the diet is helping redistribute your gut flora to a healthier balance.

                        I don't, but DH is on several plus food sources as per his naturopath. not to mention his "kill gut bacteria and parasites!" herbal supplements and his fermented "get good bacteria in there and growing" foods.

                          Sometimes I take vitamins. I don't like taking large pills - they always seem to stick, but I do take vitamins off and on, usually those vita-packs from GNC.

                          The same for me. I have always healed from cuts pretty quickly and have not noticed any change. Bruises take a little longer than cuts, but this has always been so.

                            fwiw: I've had the complete opposite effect. I used to always have at least one bug bite or scratch healing and they took forever to heal.

                              I do. In summer, I tend to supplement minimally (multi, D, magnesium) because IMO the fresh/local produce is probably delivering what I need, and the summer sups just top that off. In winter months when I buy shipped/grocery store veggies and fruits, I tend to broaden it a bit. I decided to try the Jaminets' Perfect Health Diet supp recommendations, so that's what I'm following now.
