    Phlegm. Mucus.

    For as long as I can remember I've had an unusual level of phlegm build up. The colour's clear, but it's thick and gooey. It's in the back of my nose (above, not below or inside, my throat).

    Highly gross. It interferes with socialising, I have to excuse myself to hawk up phlegm. Doctors were unhelpful. "Phlegm is normal..." Uh, not this much of it!

    What the heck could it be, some kind of inflammation? I've cut out virtually all foods that I might be allergic to, and have done so for the past 8 months. No dairy, yeast, wheat, etc. This has helped, but it hasn't eliminated the problem--not by far. And my voice is often weak. I'm wondering if the problems are connected.

    Could it be leaky gut? Candida? I'm determined to find a solution to this, and I will do whatever it takes. Any advice or suggestions are hugely appreciated.

    I have similar loogey issues. It usually hits right after I eat. Starts with needing to clear the throat and ends with a massive hawker. I have noticed since being primal for almost 2 years, that I only get it now when I eat and extra saucy/spicy meal. Dry salad or meat doesn't provoke this response, but anything covered in sauce does. Sauces in this context can be anything from butter to olive oil or CO oil. However, the worst phlegm build-up occurs after getting a non-primal sauce like you'd find at an oriental restaurant with soy sauce, MSG, or corn starch.

    I'd love to know the root cause of this also. I do think it is somewhat normal if it only occurs after eating and goes away after expelling the projectile. It's almost like overactive phlegm production or something.

      Otzi's asian restaurant theory brings up another possibility. What about oils? Sabre, what kind of oils are you using?
      I feel kind of phlegmy too after restaurant meals with unknown (probably canola or soybean) oils.
      Oils were kind of the last thing I "cleaned up" after going Primal, concentrating on the no grains, all organic part first and not thinking that a little canola was that big a deal. Now, with a seriously strict diet, I can feel the difference.

        "Post nasal drip could be what causes phlegm in the morning. Post nasal drip occurs when mucus flows backwards down your throat. Some common symptoms of this include mucus stuck at the back of your throat, constantly coughing or clearing your nose, a sore throat, a gruff voice and constantly wanting to blow your nose. Post nasal drip can be caused by dairy products, inhaled irritants, smoking, throat and swallowing disorders, colds and flu, living in dry areas, as well as eating foods that you are allergic too."

        I've always had wonky sinuses, one side or the other always stuffed up. Maybe it comes from drainage issues. Some foods make your sinuses run more than others.

          Ummm... Does it come out easily? I used to have a lot of sinus issues and take a lot of drugs for them, but now I'll use a humidifier, maybe a neti pot, and perhaps some Mucinex. It's also possible to have a very long-term sinus infection.

          I'd encourage that stuff to come out with the above methods. It'll suck for a while, but it should clear up somewhat.

            Sounds like something is irritating your sinuses. Being clear rules out infections so I wold say it is most likely allergens.

              The idea of using the neti pot has always sounded pretty unpleasant to me (basically, rinsing the sinuses)--but, a pharmacist I work with swears by it and several patients she has recommended it to have been VERY pleased with the results. It's nice to have non-pharmaceutical options....

                  I also have to recommend the Neti pot! It's not really that bad at all. And if you do it consistently it works.

                    I introduced my mom to the wonders of the Neti Pot, and now she uses it every night before bed because she says that if she does, she wakes up with no mucus.

                      I had this trouble years ago. Mine was caused by sinusitis. I went to my doctor because I had a sore throat with it. One week of medication and I was cured. Unlikely to be your problem but it is a thought.
                      Why use a sledge hammer to crack a nut when a steam roller is even more effective, and, is fun to drive.

                        It's post-nasal drip. I have had it forever. I stopped eating eggs for breakfast and now I can ride my bicycle 9 miles to work breathing through my nose the entire way with my mouth closed and not coughing.

                            No one has mentioned non-diet possibilities!

                            Look at possible mild allergies - what are the walls of your house/apartment made from? Do you have carpeting? Are the airducts in your workplace and house/apartment professionally cleaned regularly? etc. Don't just look for mold, either, you may have a mild allergy to dust mites or other common bugs/materials.

                            Just a thought.

                              Definitely food allergy related. Get tested if you can.

                              I also highly recommend a Neti pot.
