  • Wow, Cori-- Dr. Gegaudas is in Portland, Oregon, where both my buddy and I go for most of our medical stuff. (I have a Primal-Friendly MD in Hood River, Oregon.) We're just two hours east, up the Columbia Gorge. Good to know Dr. G's so close at hand.

    • I did not think marscapone was worth the money. It has almost no flavor. It melts into oil. I prefer kefir cheese or sour cream. More flavor, more versatile and cheaper.

If so, what's your experience with mascarpone and heavy cream ?

Because I tend to tolerate butter quite well, can't eat much yoghurt or milk without feeling bad, and can't eat much cheese without having acid reflux the next day.
I want to try Mascarpone since it's mostly fat...

        Thanks
Haven't tried mascarpone, but anything other than butter gives me super acne all over my body for a week.

        • OMG I made it to the end of the thread! I'm a newbie so this has been FASCINATING. It's only been a week. I thought it was going well but felt a little stopped up if you know what I mean, although everything still moving. Then today, um, all came RUSHING out. Does that sound like carb flu? Or at least normal? Felt a little queasy every day around the middle of the day but it always seems to pass.

Welcome to MDA! Sounds like typical carb flu to me and die off. My gut flora was sooooo incredibly messed up when I started this last november, and the die-off (micro-flora gut bacteria changing for the better) was so bad it took me three month-long tries cutting out the starches & sugar completely before I was good to go...

If you find yourself getting stopped up again (which was a huge stressor for me when I went through die-off) then take magnesium. What you don't absorb into your body is flushed out through the colon. Magnesium attracts water, so you can get the idea if you take too much. :P

              • Thanks lissee! I think I'm going to get some magnesium and also the "dirty" salts mentioned in that one doctor's blog re: dehydration and muscle cramps. Not having those problems but just in case. I also have been stalking Paleobird's stuff because she just seems so sensible and she mentioned coconut (either milk or cream?) as giving some the "trots". I have been testing out some coconut stuff to replace dairy and had my first taste of coconut cream yesterday. I thought WOW this is GOOD and drank about 8 oz to down my vitamins and in coffee. I think maybe that's what did it. Fortunately the "slow" guts hasn't really been too bad, just different from what I'm used to, so I think that's gonna be ok. And I hope I never have to go on the interwebs and talk about my poo ever again...

8 ounces of coconut cream is a LOT, and probably was indeed the culprit. That was a lot of fat (and calories) your digestive system probably just wasn't expecting it. If you consumed 8 ounces then that was around 75 grams of fat, something like that. No wonder it...eased things along

                  • I consumed a can of coconut milk once. Once. Never again. I didn't get the runs but I felt very sick for a whole day.

Ha! Don't worry! We've all been there.

Me too!! Unfortunately, it tastes sooooo darn good, that I've been experimenting to see what my tolerance level is. ... I did recently find some mini cans (5-6 oz) at the grocery store, they seem to be almost the perfect size.

                        • I was guesstimating on how many oz it was but still... I didn't wind up eating anything else for HOURS because I was FULL after that. (Well except the coffee.) So it occurred to me that maybe that could be breakfast from now on. But I did feel pretty yucky for a while so I don't know if I would get used to it or not. But you sure are right about how good it tastes Gonna keep experimenting though...

                          • Hey - haven't been to this thread in a while but I just wanted to pop on and offer my encouragement to follow the suggestions layed out by Paleobird (OP) on high fat, moderate protein and VLC! I'm seeing good results weight loss wise. If I keep my macros looking something like 70 - 20 - 10 I have the best results.

Its working so I'm sticking with it!

So I'm not the only one. My tolerance for coconut milk seems to be around half a can if I'm putting it in something. If I'm drinking/eating it straight, it's more like 1/4 can.

                              • Oh dear
I had a weekend of a shared a bottle or two of wine and ate some Turkish bread and I can't seem to get back into ketosis !
I am not a tracker ( and feel so free as I am now not a weigher either of me or my food)and am wondering if it is still possible to follow eat more fat without adding weight.
                                Any suggestions?
