  • Suggestions for a Full-Liquid Diet?

    My husband has to be on a low-fiber full-liquid diet, with a few soft foods, no red meat. Nothing that would thicken the stool. He's having complications with his ostomy, and will be going in for a revision surgery in a little over a week. He's eating home made cream soups - put through the blender. Tuna or chicken with a little mayo, Dijon mustard and homemade pickle relish processed until really smooth, on Oopsie Rolls (*bread* made from eggs and cream-cheese), cheese, cottage cheese, soft scrambled eggs, bananas, and applesauce. He's afraid avocados have too much fiber. I've been avoiding grains, but he has tried some cheerios and milk, but was afraid that resulted in too much fiber as well. Does anyone have any suggestions or an especially good cream soup recipe? Or a savory custard? I'm getting kind of tired of cooking the same stuff. I'm thinking of trying some chicken liver pate and seeing if he can tolerate that. He'll probably have to be on this diet for at least a week or more after the surgery. Depending on how he tolerates food, he could be eating this way for half of September or longer.

    Also -- Does anyone have a recipe for an "Ensure" drink equivalent that I can make? His doctor wants him to drink that stuff!!!

      I googled "home made ensure" and all kinds of interesting suggestions came up. I'm totally not qualified to pick one for you but it seems pretty likely you'll be able to find a suitable alternative based on your intimate knowledge of the situation.

        If he can eat eggs, then deviled eggs, scrambled, poached, etc. Now would be a good time to Invest in a juicer; you can squeeze all the nutrients out of fresh veggies and fruit and leave the fiber behind. You can make fresh carrot juice, which is so delicious to drink as-is, then make soup out of it too. Freshly squeezed tomatoes for tomato soup. So good.

        Stock, lots of bone stock from fish, grass-fed animals' bones. This is so good for the gut and gentle to digest. I just made some by adding beef shanks to the crockpot with 12 cups water, carrots, chives, bay leaf, and pink salt; I slow-cooked it for 2 days, now I am waiting to skim the fat.

        Beef liver processed very finely tastes like fresh liverwurst to me. Very tasty. You can mix it into soups for some variety. Mashed potatoes and other root veggies that are low in fiber taste really good with just salt and a fat.

        White fish like tilapia, poached, is soft and easy.

        Definitely consider the juicer. I really like mine and use it more than I thought I would.

        Also, Zico coconut waters, especially chocolate is so yummy and loaded with electrolytes. Highly recommended for nutritious treats.

          I would go for grassfed bone marrow stock! and I would avoid chicken whick can be an inflammatory! Make sure all of the food he gets in whatever form is the best you can afford, as in organic and pastured free range greassfed etc! And purified water. Cream of celery soup is low fiber and low carb. I would probably avoid most cheese even grassfed or raw since they can constipate also bananas!

          Do you make custards with egg yolks? And mayhap a yogurt icecream? Just freeze organic plain yogurt in an ice tray then place in a blender/processor with flavoring choice (vanilla) and some stevia for quick ice cream.

            What I don't get is it all ends up liquid in the intestines after chewing and your stomach works on it so why does it need to be liquid going in? Anyway my vote is for broth. Add veggies and cream, purée and you have cream soup.

              protein smoothies. Try Sun Warrior warrior blend in vanilla. Maybe throw in some greek yogurt

                  I guess I should have had my coffee first, cuz this made me hungry And it reminded me that I want to make some bone broth soon. And so glad you posted, I had forgotten I wanted to try the Oopsie Rolls! We really didnt do much bread before, thus why I forgot I guess, but sometimes I wish I had something.

                    Yeah -- We really like the Oopsie Rolls! I've started filling a jelly roll pan with the batter (I grease the pan and also use parchment paper, then after it is baked I can pull the whole thing out by the parchment paper to cool on a rack). It takes batter made with 4 oz. cream cheese & 4 eggs (plus salt and cream of tartar) to fill a standard jelly roll pan. When it's cool I cut it into 8 pieces. I can bake 2 jelly roll pans at once in my oven, so I can make a lot more this way.

                    Thanks to everyone who responded. I'll see if I can get my husband to try a protein shake -- he thinks it is silly for me to go to the work of making him one when all he needs to do is open a can of ensure.

                    Also -- to those who suggested a juicer -- I've been thinking about getting one, but there are so many different kinds. What kind would you suggest? Then I'd have to find a place to put it... but I suppose I could get rid of the breadmaker & rice cooker...

                    This is going to be an extremely busy week for us, I may not be able to post again until next week.

                      don't forget coconut milk. you can use it in place of cream, even with quiche. (crustless, of course.)
