  • Primal and Acne?

    Hey Guys --

I have off and on acne (gets worse with shaving). Has anyone experienced increased acne due to the increase oil/fat intake on Primal?

actually, I noticed an extreme drop in acne. I used to have it all the time, now it's just in a small area (that I'm assuming will go away as I continue to lose the weight and reduce intake of sugars)

The oil isn't giving you acne. It's likely to be that your body is expelling toxins from going primal. Do you eat dairy?

I'm the same as darienx, however I did notice something interesting the other day. I've never noticed any side effects from dairy before and I have eaten a massive amount of it in my time but the other day I had a greek yoghurt and came out with a lot of acne, haven't eaten anymore and it's all but gone.

yup i had to drop cheese in particular because(besides massively overeating it) i get constipated and get acne! sour cream, butter, ghee and strained goat yogurt seem to be okay

Totally the opposite. As long as I stay away from wheat and dairy and slop coconut oil on everything, my skin is great. But if I cheat with a pastry or a bit of cheese on something, I get zits within a few hours.

Yep, zero dairy, zero grains. (It's not that grim; I always hated milk anyway!)

Sorry -- I meant in response to the question. I am eating neither dairy nor grains. So they wouldn't be a possible source of acne.

I'd go with the toxins then, and possibly candida die off. It'll probably clear up by itself in a while. I think this is a common problem in the beginning.

There was a post on this earlier, apparently ketosis/fat metabolism releases stored toxins and hormones:

Nuts. Do you eat a lot of nuts? My dermatologist told me that dairy and nuts seem to aggrivate acne. If dairy doesn't get you it could be the nuts. I have found my acne prone skin a lot more lovely with the increase in fat. Just give it time. You probably have a lot of toxins in there. When I went primal my skin became awful and now a few weeks later it is much nicer.

Teamommy -- I eat a LOT of nuts, but have never really had this problem before (I always ate a lot of nuts)... I have always eaten clean, I have just recently cut out grains + dairy completely (and protein bars), and upped my fat intake.

27ko there appears to be a very strong link between chronic inflammation and acne. A proper primal diet should take care of it if your only source of systemic inflammation is traceable to diet.
