  • Help decipher these lab results...

    Two of the areas showed outside the normal range:

    BUN: 30mg/dl (Says range is 9-25)
    Creatinine: 1.6mg/dl (says range is .7 to 1.5)

    Any cause for concern?

    Do you lift a lot? If so creatinine can become elevated.

    Not sure about BUN...did you ask your doc?
    Eating primal is not a diet, it is a way of life.

      BUN = blood urea nitrogen. I don't know how to lower it, though.

        alcohol and fructose can raise creatinine. Dr Richard Johnson is a kidney specialist w/ the University of Colorado. Dr. Richard Johnson And His Research on Food Ingredients

        IIRC he says a man should limit fructose to under 15 grams per day. (that should also apply to alcohol)
        Would I be putting a grain-feed cow on a fad diet if I took it out of the feedlot and put it on pasture eating the grass nature intended?

            No. Lots of walking and sprinting. Lifting occasionally.

              You might be surprised. Fructose is in 80% of the foods in grocery stores. I was eating healthy salads at Applebee's.....until I realized the dressing was full of fructose. The last jar of pickled herring I bought I noted the sweetness so looked at the ingredients: Herring, high fructose corn syrup, onions,.....there's more HFCS in that jar then oinions.

              I also had high creatinine and found out from Dr Johnson and Matt Lalonde that fructose was the cause. Creatinine is a measure of kidney damage. In a 6 hour seminar that Lalonde gives he mentioned telling someone with high creatinine to cut fructose/alcohol. The guy researched everything he could find in his diet made with it. Lalonde said the guy lowered his creatinine to normal, had been going to doctors for 10 years for his high creatinine, and nobody ever told him that.

                Kevin, if your like me and like beer.....I re-listened the interview since I hadn't listen to it in awhile. Dr. Johnson says that the yeast and other stuff used in the making of beer have the exact same affect as fructose (hence the beer belly) . You don't get this effect with wine or other liquors.

                  I do drink beer, but not excessively. Maybe one per day, two some days.

                  I'm also wondering if this is a hydration issue as I'm almost certain I don't drink enough water...??

                    Also...it seems they ran a combined BUN/Creatinine test that came out normal. I don't really understand it all. The individual BUN and Creatinine were flagged as out of range but the combined was in range if I'm reading this right.

                        It could be the result of a high/higher protein diet. I get a CMP done about every 6 mos. and noticed the same thing pre-primal vs. post-primal with my BUN and creatinin. I also don't drink enough fluids throughout the day, IMO. Probably 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of fluids per day. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless the numbers really climb.
