  • Airplane food ideas

    I'll be going on a 5 hour flight this weekend. I'm not able to IF at this time. What are some good foods to take on the plane? I'm thinking about doing a sweet potato and some steak strips. I'll probably bring some trail mix, too. Any other ideas? Thanks!

      I would avoid all the food on the plane. If you *have* to eat something, choose the nuts. Drink water. If you do dairy, maybe bring a cheese stick or two. If you don't mind getting messy, bring an avocado. If you need to bring an entire meal, get some tupperware and bring a salad.

        Sure you are! Unscheduled IF's are the best...airline foods are the worst. Used to be you could get one of the meals and just eat the salad or something, but now with those crappy little picnic boxes, all you get is junk food. If they offer fruit of any kind, that's not so bad.

        I fly a lot. Long flights, too (Alaska to lower 48). The last 6 or 8 times I've flown, I make it a point not to eat in the air. I'll grab a salad or something good in the airport.

        If you need to eat for a medical reason, definitely plan ahead and bring some fruit, if allowed, or other primal easy-to-pack items like natural beef jerky, cheese, or nuts. I usually don't go for the trail mix they sell as such, but make my own--plain almonds, dark chocolate, mac nuts.

        Since you are in Hawaii, maybe just a couple cans of SPAM.

          Your idea sounds good. I might add some nuts to hold you over in case you're on the plane longer than expected. (Like sitting on the runway for a couple of hours.)

          Not sure if there are any rules about what foods are allowed through security, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check into that.

            I flew from Sydney to Vancouver and back a month ago. I had ordered the gluten free meals. They were gluten free, dairy free, fat free, flavour free - completely unappealing. I ate parts of them on the way there. On the 15.5 hr flight back I fasted - just didn't want to open another of those crappy boxes. Made for a 24hr fast all up, but I do that weekly anyhow so no issue
            Four years Primal with influences from Jaminet & Shanahan and a focus on being anti-inflammatory. Using Primal to treat CVD and prevent stents from blocking free of drugs.

            Eat creatures nose-to-tail (animal, fowl, fish, crustacea, molluscs), a large variety of vegetables (raw, cooked and fermented, including safe starches), dairy (cheese & yoghurt), occasional fruit, cocoa, turmeric & red wine

              Good luck getting anything edible past security without the excuse of:
              1) "I'm pregnant"
              2) "I'm diabetic"
              3) See above 2 & combine
              4) "it's for my toddler"

                I fly at least a couple of times a month and have never even been questioned about any of the food I bring through security; I put it in my backpack and let it go through the scanner. Liquids are a different story and won't make it through. I usually have fruit, jerky, and almonds in my bag or maybe I'll buy a salad once I'm through security. I have these snacks in case hunger gets out of control but usually try to just not eat.

                If I knew I'd need a meal while in the air I'd bring one similar to what you've mentioned and i'd expect to get it through security without issue. Something like yogurt or soup might be tougher if security decides it's a liquid.

                  This. I always pack an ass-crap ton of food and never had issues with going through security. I even brought a box of donuts and no one batted an eye (and exceeded my onboard limit, but apparently with donuts, this is okay).

                  I like the idea of a sweet potato and steak. Hard boiled eggs can also be nice (portable), and occasionally I'll bring cooked sausage. For carby things, I try to avoid stanky stuff more for consideration of others on board (I really like roasted broccoli, but it doesn't smell so great after a while).

                    The problem with security is anything that is not fully solid counts as a liquid. Peanut butter is not allowed. I had to throw out a jar of coconut butter--they wouldn't let that past security. They said the principle is that if it is moldable (including Playdough) it is not allowed. Meat and salad should be fine but not dressing, unless you put the allowed amount in your baggie of liquids.

                        I fly back and forth from the US to Egypt pretty regular. The leg between Egypt and Europe is only about 4.5 hours, Europe to US is 10 hours or so. This last time, flying British Air, I ordered the gluten free and, as somebody else described it, it was pretty bad. This time I'm flying Luthansia and I'll try thier gluten free, we shall see. I fly business class so overall the food is better than in cattle class.

                        Other than that, I usually will try to load up with almonds, etc in the lounge before boarding or bring my own jerky and almonds. I have never had any problems with security with items like that.

                        It also helps that I sleep well on the plane so if I decide not to eat, I just sleep through the meal.

                            On long flights I've tucked a couple of Steve's Original Paelokits in my carryon. Remember to bring napkins, even though they're vacuum packed they can be messy.

                              I am going on a 20 hour trip tomorrow changing three planes. I am planning it as a 30+ hour fast (from dinner the night before, through the trip and until we arrive to the hotel & meet my relatives) to kick start the no exercise routine I will have to adopt on vacations, but I will bring along macadamia nuts as a back up for the airplane.
