  • Help! How to accurately calculate grams of protein, fat & carbs?

    Hi, everyone. I'm 9 days in and feeling insanely awesome. I'm very analytical so trying to understand how to calculate grams of protein and fat and carbs from foods.

    I've done my calculations and for my body type I need to lose weight (efficiently/quickly).

    93 grams of protein (320-440 calories)
    <80 grams of carbs (400-600 calories)
    100 grams of Fat (900 calories).


    So, if I eat 5 strips of bacon in the morning -- what percentage is protein and what percentage is fat?

    If I eat 3 eggs - what percentage do I allocate as protein and what % is fat?

    The vegetables are straight forward --- It's almost impossible for me to get close to 600 calories of veggies a day --- I'm not a big salad eater.

    Pure fat is easy to calculate -- 1 Tablespoon = x fat calories or grams.


    I'm just a little unsure about how to calculate fat, especially when it's mixed in with the protein.

    Any help/advice is appreciated.

    There are a lot of online tools to help with this. Off the top of my head I can think of Fitday, Myplate, Chonometer, and my personal favorite SparkPeople. It doesn't really matter which one you choose. Try a few and see which one works best for you.

    Then you can plug in amounts of food e.g. 3 eggs, 2 strips bacon, and it will give you breakdowns by macronutrient and keep a running tally for the day showing you how close you are to your target numbers.

      There are many places where you can track what you eat online for free. They will usually tell you those sorts of things. So, for example, according to FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal 5 thin slices of bacon is 135 calories, 10.4g of fat, 0.4 carbs, and 9.3g of protein. In percentages (shown below where you track, that is 70% fat, 1% carb, 29% protein.

            It is sometimes nice to track what is going on but please do NOT over think this.
            Eat and enjoy!
            Eating primal is not a diet, it is a way of life.
