  • Juicing Vegetables?

    A lot of people I know are really into juicing vegetables. I think that movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead has inspired the juicing movement.

    What do you think about this? Pro's? Cons?

    I like to eat my veggies whole, but once in a while those veggie drinks are pretty good (and they FEEL healthy!).

    I make 24oz almost daily. Its a nice rush oh highly dense nutrients right into your system. I don't typically use it as a replacement for vegetables in my meal but it is very delicious.. and its a nice in place of water you might drink between meals.

      I like a glass of veggie juice once in a while, and the juicer grates the veggies just right to make souffles out of the leftovers with quark and egg whites. Yum. Like whole veggies, but sometimes something different is nice

          An alternative to juicing is getting a heavy duty horsepower blender like a VitaMix. This way you get the whole veggies and not just the juice. And it comes out nice and smooth, not lumpy.

          My Jack Lalaine juicer has gone into retirement since I got a Vita Mix.

            Yes, I wouldn't recommend "juicing" at all if by that you mean a machine that just squeezes out juice and discards the pulp and fiber. Use a Vitamix or Blendtec instead. Points to remember:

            -Always add fat to your veggie smoothie
            -Be conscious of portion control. "Drinking" your food is an easy way to overeat since it goes down so quick and easy.
            -Be conscious of the high oxalate content of spinach and other leafy greens.

                  I have a Champion juicer and love to have the occ fresh juice, though I use it less when eating primal. Juice can either be all sugarry fruits and veggies (the usual apple, carrot, beet or any other sweet fruit juices) or can be mostly low carb greens (celery, cucumber, leafy greens, zucchini, cilantro). Very different endproducts. I usually use mostly low carb green veggies, with one carrot or apple or beet thrown in for a wee bit of sweet and flavour. Juicing fresh ginger adds real zing. Adding cilantro is heavenly.

                    Juicing veggies is fun and VERY tasty.

                    Forget about the damn pulp, too.

                    Fiber is fine, but the point of JUICING, not BLENDING
                    is that your body readily absorbs all the vitamins and micronutrients
                    post-haste, instead of having to muck around with all that damn
                    fiber first.

                    I'd much rather DRINK 300grams of spinach, a head of lettuce,
                    two heads of kale and a clutch of parsley than EAT it, ANY DAY.

                    But then I also don't recommend juicing everything under the sun
                    and having that be a way of life.

                    Like yesterday - I was FULLY hungover from drinking a shit ton of
                    crap ass wine and food was NOT on the agenda, but I was going somewhere
                    for about 3 hours and knew I would have to have something.

                    So I juiced up 10 carrots, 2 apples and 2 nectarines.

                    I felt WAY better afterwards and I wasn't even hungry until 6hrs later.

                    Weird, but I think when your body has the vitamins and minerals its craving
                    and it doesn't have to go through the HUGE digestive process, it's satisfied
                    more quickly and you don't have to chew a thing.

                    So, juice on!

                      I agree about forgetting the fiber part...juicing veggies has been a lifesaver for me. I have IBS, and have more recently realized that the fiber in vegetables makes my digestive system very angry with me. Juicing the veggies and throwing away the pointless INDIGESTIBLE part is an epic win in my book.

                        I love to see how many nutrients I can get with the least amount of calories.

                        I did one green juice once that was 256 calories and 97% of my RDA targets
                        for the DAY.

                        Talk about an epic win....... hee hee!

                          Nice...but I still question why we are even bothering to refer to the USRDA for anything anymore. Remember, they still recommend eating a ton of calories from breads, pastas, and startches! The paleo/primal movement will eventually make them irrelevant.

                            I'm not referring to them whatsoever, I just like to see how much of everything
                            I'm getting of all vitamins, minerals and micronutrients.

                            EVERYTHING on cronometer is listed and it's cool to see what's what.

                            Most of the things on there I exceed by 200% - though, like you say, who can
                            trust their range of micronutriens, but I just like to see what I actually GOT.

                            Their recommendations might be off, but the nutrients still exist, even if we
                            don't know exactly how many we're "supposed" to be getting a day.

                            Not sure if any of that makes sense.................. but I get it! har!

                              more thoughtful stuff on this site. i am following the "juicing" threads closely. as one of those who hates vegetables and esp salads. my intake is sub optimal. i know i need the vits and anti oxis. also hate pills. take some DM and hypertension meds. can't deal with 10-12 vit pills on top of that. might restart fish oil pending latest labs. that would be about it. i AM willing to supplement fiber. got the one used in CAD research. spending $ on a quality juicer has a bunch of appeal at this point. only concern is concentrated simple sugars in the DM setting.
