  • Cholesterol in coconut oil

I just bought some coconut oil over the weekend (and LOVE it!) and shared my excitement with my parents. My dad said to be careful because it has high cholesterol. I'm thinking he's just being cautious because he had a heart attack back in the 80's. Or he just doesn't have up to date info.

Does anyone know of any credible source to show that coconut oil is not a danger? Thanks!

Buy the book, 'The Miracle of Coconut Oil'. It shows how coconut oil is not only not dangerous, but one of the best foods you can eat. Lots and lots of wonderful saturated fat.

The studies they did on coconut oil (the studies that revealed it was bad) were done on hydrogenated coconut oil. Not the same thing as the coconut oil on the shelves today.

FYI- Coconut oil has ZERO cholesterol.

Maybe he has that confused with Saturated fat which is what Coconut oil mostly is.

Saturated fat is really good for you however.

I love the stuff. The two that I really like are Nutiva and Tropical Traditions. Some brands taste really bad, perhaps due to the extraction process.

I've used 365 (Whole Foods house brand, $7/14 oz.) Virgin for the last few months. I have also used Spectrum Refined Organic and I have used refined coconut oil for soap making. There is no flavor with the refined, of course.

              All perfectly palatable.

OP, you need to read the pages on this site and thousands of others about serum and dietary cholesterol not being any kind of indicator of heart problems.

I found Spectrum unrefined in my grocery store. I'm going to look for the coconut book on Amazon. Thanks for the tips everyone!
