• Any side effects with PB lifestyle?

    Ok, this is my third attempt and I'm giving up after this one. I don't understand why my first two attempts were closed.

    Attempt 3:

    Good morning folks. I'm new to the boards but not new to the Daily Apple. I just finished reading PB and have been actively practicing for the last 10 days.

    Background - I'm 39, 175 with 10% body fat (trying to get single digit). I'm currently on my third round of P90X, specifically week two. I plan to do this entire round primally in order to actively attack that last stubborn bit of fat covering my lower abs.

    I've been limiting my carbs to between 50-80 grams per day with a total fast on Friday's (Lent is the perfect opportunity for fasting). I guess my quetion is has anyone suffered side-effects in the early stages? I just haven't been feeling right but I can't seem to put my finger on the exact nature of the problem. Will this pass as my body becomes more attuned to primal nutrition?

    My workouts have been fine so I'm definitely fueled up enough. I just have a funny feeling in my head.

    Thanks for the help,

    Chris

    A lot of people get what they affectionately call the "low-carb flu" when they first switch over. It has something to do with your body switching over from burning carbs as fuel to burning fat. If you search the site for "low carb flu" you'll find a bunch of threads dealing with that that may help you see if that's what's going on.

    It might help to post a typical day of eating as well. It could be something you are eating, not eating enough of, etc, and the cool folks here can help point out some possibilities.

    I didn't notice your posts being closed to replies, so maybe just a techno hiccup?

      I went though a period when i first started where it felt like something was just missing. I think it was sugar withdrawl.

        Although some people on here have done it, I say itd be super hard to do a round of P90x while transitioning to low carb. The low carb flu + plyo just seems like a recipie for some hard core crashing and cravings.

        I only had the low carb flu for 2 days, my fiance had it for almost 2 weeks. We both feel great now. Other side effects include: more energy, better sleep, weightloss, bacon, and better hair,skin and nails.

                      I didn't work out much for the first two weeks of eating primal. I was just too dizzy, tired, and even a little shaky. I talked to my doctor and she said (as Minxxa also said) that it's your body switching from relying on foods that give quick jolts of energy (carbs, sugars) to using fat for energy.

                      I'm almost back to my regular workout schedule (modified crossfit 3x a week) and this is the beginning of week 4 for me.

                        Thanks to everyone that replied. It might just be "low carb flu". Will research that on the forum and see what it comes back with.

                        As for the improved hair, does it make it grow back? I'm shaving the whole thing now as it is lol.

                        @minxaa -

                        Here's my typical day of eating:

                        /// before leaving for work

                        Shakeology upon waking (3:45 a.m. followed by immediate workout)

                        P90X recovery formula post workout (half serving)

                        Protein shake, 2Tbsp almond butter, 1/4 cup blueberries

                        /// at work

                        Breakfast - 4 whole eggs scrambled, 2 chicken sausages, 1oz. Walnuts

                        Lunch - 6 oz. Chicken breast, 3 cups steamed broccoli, 1oz walnuts

                        Dinner - 2 cups leafy greens, 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 5 oz. Tuna

                        Pre-bed - protein shake (casein)

                        This should be around 2400 total if my math is right.

                          @cc: Am I really THAT predictable?

                          Guess I am ("That's what HE said!")

                          ;-)

                          The SO likes it, however...

                            I'm fairly new to this too, but I noticed that almost all of your fats are coming from vegetable sources, rather than animal sources. Do you leave the skin on the chicken? If not then both your lunch and dinner sources of protein are very low in fat and high in protein.

                            There's no need to be afraid of saturated fats they don't need to be avoided to lose weight. I love butter and full cream but if you don't want dairy you can also use bacon fat or lard to cook stuff in for added fat. At the market I go to they sell big tubs of pure duck fat, I haven't tried but it sounds good.

                            I also second the low carb flu. I had that for a few weeks, whereas I felt weak and spaced out as if I was just crashing from having a huge carby meal, because the body was still looking for carbs for its fuel. Now it's switched over to fat burning and feels much mores stable. Good ol' fat!
