Impoverished nations have a high incidence of obesity. This is coupled with the majority of the population employed in manual labour and comsuming a low amount of calories.

    The "Seven Deadly Sins"

    Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc) . . . . . Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant etc)
    Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc) . . . Refined foods (salt/sugars etc )
    Legumes (soy/beans/peas etc)

That's the point of Gary Taubes' research. It wasn't so much about Americans wanting to lose weight, but to try to answer the question of how we get obesity in poverty.

I think there are a ton of studies that support Taubes theory that it isn't just about calories. I've heard his references section is 100+ pages.

IMNSHO history will show that Ancel Keys was a diversion. 21st Century dietary research is following up pre-Keys knowledge with a far greater amount of detail (things like leptin, ghrelin, anandamide, incretins etc. have only recently been discovered and how they all fit together will take a while to work out)

The last fifty or so years of Conventional Wisdom will come to be seen as naive to the point of being dangerous to health.

It'll take a while longer though.
