  • Loosing weight but gaining body fat

    I have been doing the PB for a month now and I feel great and look better than I have in a long time. However, even though the scale is going down, I have been getting higher and higher numbers on the body fat meter. Granted I don't have a perfect primal diet in that I am lenient with oils and sugar a little because I don't like vinegarette salad dressings and instead have been using store bought ones until I find a primal ranch or something similar. Could this be why I am losing weight but gaining body fat?

    I have also bought my own body fat meter as opposed to using the gym's and that is the one that is showing the gain, could that also be why, the meters are not all the same?

    I plan to stick with the PB because I feel great but I really need to figure out why my percentage is going up.

    Those meters can be wildly inaccurate. The number is likely going up because you are losing lots of water weight since your glycogen stores aren't being chronically topped up with a high carb diet. They work by passing a small electric current from one foot (or hand) to the other. If you have less water in your muscles, the meter will read higher. Measurements (waist, thigh, arm, etc.) and how you look in the mirror are better gauges.

      scales and body fat meters are notoriously unreliable markers for actual success. i recommend throwing them out, or at least leaving them in the closet for a while. they're not telling you anything helpful, and both can be wildly affected by something as simple as drinking water.
      if you want to track your progress, stick with the numbers you can literally see--measurements. measure your arms, chest, waist, legs, etc. and keep track of how those change. really, you don't even need to go that advanced. my belt was my best progress tool when i started losing weight. if your clothes are looser, you're getting smaller.
      also consider taking photos of yourself for another visual progress tracker. mostly, though, just take periodic notice of how you feel, how much energy you have, etc.

      those oils and sugars...they're not going to totally derail your weight loss, but they're not really helping at all either. furthermore, the vegetable oils you find in supermarket salad dressings are probably the most un-primal food that there is. use the forums search function to find more recipes for salad dressings than you will ever find in a grocery story.

        Body measurements are way more reliable than impedance meters. Take waist, hips, thigh, biceps, and neck at regular intervals. Those will tell you what you need to know.

          it's really hard to lose weight and gain fat at the same time, assuming you're not a horrible alcoholic. i don't think that's actually occuring.

            My only gripe with this method is that the trainer who was doing the measuring at my gym was not always measuring in the same exact places as she did the previous time so I think it threw my numbers off.

                  Hey, Greenmanspirit! the best salad dressing is just to pour plain olive oil on your salad, don't mix it with anything. Buy the best you can and use it liberally

                    I actually tried to teach myself not to use salad dressing but that is admittedly boring lol. I will probably give this a try because it is simple enough for my tight morning schedule.

                      Ew, I love dressings WAY too much to live without them, and find naked salad boring at best, usually bitter and dry.

                      I make my own dressings once a week.

                      Primal ranch? Easy.

                      1 cup homemade mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream
                      1/4 cup buttermilk
                      1/2 teaspoon dried chives
                      1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
                      1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
                      1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
                      1/4 teaspoon onion powder
                      1/8 teaspoon salt
                      1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

                        this is a strange response for me, but are you eating more lean protein (at the expense of eating fat?). i've noticed that i start to be more "poofy" if i let my protein get "too high" for more than a day or too in a row. which can be easy to do because the lean protein is not as satiating. although i generally have very high protein anyway, i find that i stay leaner when i'm eating mid-fat/high fat choices-- like chicken thighs without skin, duck, fatty fish, rabbit-- that i do on either very high fat choices (lamb, chuck steak, brisket) or very low fat choices (tilapia, chicken breast, etc.). a little from either group doesn't seem to bother me an iota, but if I make a habit of consuming either exclusively it's hello pudge.

                          I will have to try that, my biggest roadblock right now is the mayo. I have tried making it a few times and it either comes out tasting to much like the oil or so runny that I can't spread it right. On my next paycheck I plan to buy a whole lot of ingredients and just play with it till I get it right.

                          Interesting. I usually eat a lot of lean meats rather than ones with a mid to high fat content. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I am not getting enough fat. I did find a bag of boneless skinless chicken thighs the other day at Sam's Club (I know, not the best quality but what I can afford) and I have noticed that I am reaching for them more often than the breast I have in the freezer now so maybe my body is telling me to cut back on the lean meat.

                            Hey people I need some help here! I too experience the same thing, ie losing weight but gaining body fat. I did the measurement of hips/neck/forearm/waist ratio at regular interval and the calculation really threw me off. I had lost 2kg in 1mth but I gained a total of 2% body fat. I am on a 60% fat (80-90g), 30% protein (70-80g) and 10% carbo (40-50g)...

                            What could be the reason???

                              No matter what the calculations are, it's very unlikely that you are consistently losing weight and gaining fat. If you lost about 1 lb per week (.5 kg per week), it's very unlikely you are actually gaining fat.

                              IMHO, calculations and body fat measurement scales are less effective than visual assessments of weight loss.
