  • Quitting caffiene. Cocoa instead. Better?

I inadvertantly went a day without coffee, and felt so tired I took it as a sign I rely on caffeine too much!

So I'm having cocoa instead when I fancy a hot drink. Is this better?

Just thinking of the theobromine/reported stimulants in cocoa.

I don't want to replace one bad habit with another!

At least cocoa has magnesium and iron.

Might not have enough stimulants in it for you to feel 100%. When I was addicted to caffeine I went from coffee to one week of drinking black tea/ Yerba Mate. The week after I drank 1-2 cups green tea and was fine. You can experiment with the cocoa though, I don't think there is any harm in a cup or two of it a day given that you use stevia or honey to sweeten it (if you sweeten it).

It's very difficult to wean yourself from a caffeine addiction. I would suggest a gradual approach. Switch to instant coffee. Buy a bottle of caffeinated and a bottle of decaf. Start by mixing in 1/4 decaf with your regular coffee. Gradually increase the amount until you are drinking all decaf. Then buy some Teccino herbal drink from Whole Foods. This is a chicory based herbal drink that mimics the look and texture of coffee. Start mixing that in with your decaf the same way you mixed the decaf in with regular coffee before. Slowly increase the Teccino until you are drinking all Teccino.

Now you've emancipated yourself from caffeine AND gotten another equally difficult monkey off your back -- the powerful flavor of coffee, which crowds out all other flavors. This is similar to the way highly addictive refined sugar crowds out the sweet taste of natural fruits.

Now you are ready to enjoy the subtle, variable tastes and benefit from the dense nutritional profiles of herbal teas, which are what EVERYBODY should be drinking instead of the parasitic coffee.

If you want a coffee fix, but want to take the chocolate route instead, check out Crio Bru. It's roasted ground cacao nibs. I just eat them, but apparently you can make hot drinks with them. I have an aeropress, but can't figure out how to use it for Crio.
