  • Is it Primal?



    Ok, I have been primal for a few months, with great results. I am losing weight, sleeping better, I have more energy and just feeling like a different person.


    But I have some food items I can't decide if they are primal. Are you eating any of he following?


    Green beans, peas, chick peas, edemame, snow peas? Are there any other iffy things you have come across?

    Edamame are baby soy beans = not primal


    peas, chick peas, snow peas = legumes = not primal


    green beans are actually unripe bean pods = part of

    the legume family = also not primal


    I'll have green beans every so often, but pass on the soy products, peas, chick peas, and all other beans in general (kidney, white, navy, black, pinto, etc.). There are plenty of other delicious vegetables that don't contain the anti-nutrients found in legumes!

      Hannahc is 100% correct about them being legumes, however as to whether or not you can eat them, the peas and green beans, while following PB seems to be a point of contention on the forums.

        I assumed they weren't primal, but then found lots of recipes on MDA that include them.

        Just to note - yellow split peas as per "ham and pea soup" certainly disagreed with me, so are now off limits.

          This breaks my heart... I have a whole bag of snow peas/snap peas in my fridge that I eat almost daily... I didn't even think of the fact that they are legumes... boo!

            If it is in the pod it is too young to have any of the nasties that are associated with legumes.


            Therefore, green beans, green peas, snow peas, sugar peas, etc are fine.


            Basically if you could go into your grannies garden and take it off the plant and pop it in your mouth right there it's OK.

              It's the roots that make a legume a legume not the seed. You would not want too eat a dried wax bean any more than you would want too eat a fresh kidney bean.

                I'm with chima, even if Mark isn't. The fresh, young pods of green beans probably have more in common with broccoli than beans. Ditto snow peas.

                  I see both sides of the debate on green beans and snow peas. For me, the qualify as a "sensible indulgence" in which I'll occasionally indulge under the 80/20 principle. Besides, they make a damn fine delivery system for melted butter.

                      Seriously! What is better in early July than a steaming heap of fresh yellow wax beans with inch thick pad of melting butter!
