  • Hello Breadsauce,

I take 1/2 teaspoon in the morning with a high Ph level water. (Dr. Willard's water) I also take another before dinner. (too late in evening will most likely keep you up at night.)

I put it in the Willard's water and drink before my meal, or I drink it right after my meal. I also keep myself hydrated throughout the day, as that helps with keeping the DE moving. Without hydration it is very dry and could be doing that as well to your intestines or BM's. I've heard of one person who took 2 heaping tablespoons almost no water or appropriate meals, and was told he had some bleeding of the intestines. You can't start off with a bang if you want your detox to knock you out of the ball park. (flu like syptoms: headaches, and stomach cramps)
Let your body adjust to the detox and hydration which washes everything out.

I'm glad to know that your blood went away after you stopped. That's most important.
Hope it works well for you if you decide to take it again,
and most importantly listen to your body as to what works for you and what doesn't!

I have read this entire thread, as well as others and I've found one repeated constant that rings true. Paleo REFUSES to allow herself to learn. I honestly don't mean to bring politics into this matter but I truly would like to know; Paleo, are you a right-wing Republican? Because these are the types of people that I've found whom strongly detest FACTS. The interjection of "facts" into a debate seems to confuse and complicate their ability to promote their false, misguided or uneducated message. Even when they realize that they have just received a "Scientific / Factual and intellectual beat down" these folks stick to their guns and tend to repetitiously regurgitate some tag line or buzz word. (IE: SAND!! it's SAND!!)

I wonder if you've ever muttered the words, "Hmm, I guess I was wrong." or "Wow, I didn't know that..." or heaven forbid, the elusive, ego-diminishing, "YOU WERE RIGHT!" during a topical debate.
Your description sounds more like a left-wing liberal nut job Democrat, they are the ones who do not get the facts right or even research them, remember our fine president (YOU CAN KEEP YOUR DOCTOR AND HEALTH CARE PLAN IF YOU LIKE IT), hhmmm well then again maybe I lied and got it wrong, you can't, ohh well poor you.

      • DE does not puncture the body or shell of the insect it removes a waxy substance to which I forget the name, but this waxy substance is what helps beetle-type bugs from dehydrating and helps keep water in their system, in essence the bug dies from dehydration, not from cuts to its shell or body, how long could you survive if your skin could not retain the water in our systems, it would evaporate out as fast as we could drink and put it back in, you have to sleep at some point in time and you would dehydrate, thus dieing, kind of a cruel way to go but it is a bug afterwords. Example DE does not affect or harm earthworms at all.

        • Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica...Various forms of silica include sand, emerald, quartz, feldspar, mica, clay, asbestos, and glass. Silica does not exist naturally in its pure form. It usually reacts with oxygen and water to form silicon dioxide. Silicon dioxide has two naturally occurring forms: crystalline and amorphous. Most diatomaceous earth is made of amorphous silicon dioxide (http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/degen.html)

Without knowing your complete health history, an educated guess isn't possible. Current health conditions, how your body metabolizes substances, any medications and dietary supplements taken in conjunction with DE as well as when you take it, the amount taken, are variables that affect diagnosis. You may want to consult your healthcare professional (ie certified nutritionist and your DO) for their opinion on adverse effects of DE.

Best wishes resolving your issues with DE.

          • I have read the entire thread. It took my Sunday morning from me. I now know more than I did. Some of what I have learned is good. And for the "is it sand debate" I thought this might amuse sand.jpg

            • I started taking DE within the last couple of weeks. I haven't been consistent taking it, but I'll be sure to let you guys know if I die or get cancer.

They were cut up and dehydrated by the tiny silica particles. RIP.

Hello? What are you saying? Are you a spammer?

I did stop taking the DE because it made me very constipated no matter how much water/magnesium I took. Not worth it to me.

                      • when I said you are not taking any of it, you are not taking any OA! OA meaning orthosilicic acid. You put D.E. in a water container (about 1 gallon) and you let it dissolve in the water and then give it 1 to 3 days to settle down to the bottom. During that time, D.E. and the water will create orthosilicic acid. You only drink the water...that will have the orthosilicic acid. The D.E stays behind at the bottom of the container. You then refill the container and just REPEAT. Mix the water the D.E. already in the bottom and then wait 1-3 days again.

For constipation..... taking D.E. this way should not even caused it.

You had to be taking D.E. with some other method...maybe taking too much for it to cause you constipation.

Interesting. I read a lot about this, but never read to take DE in this manner. Mostly the articles said mix it into juice or water and chug it down, or put it into a smoothie. So that's what I did.

                          • Nameless - I've never read anything about taking DE that way either. I wish I was having the constipating effects like you!

                            • Elliott, here...dear breadsauce...You over did it...that's all...I stir one spoon in my iced coffee once a day and make sure to drink AT LEAST 8 bottles of water every day.....Sounds like you took too much and did not drink enough water....

After reading lots of good things about DE, I ordered some food grade and started taking 2 teaspoons mixed with water in the morning and 2 in the evening, on an empty stomach. I was waiting to see all the marvellous benefits - but after a few days I started having blood with BM's. And an ache in my gut. So - I stopped taking it and after a few days all is back to normal.

Now, this could be a coincidence. Or it could be as a result of taking ~DE at all.

Does other people here use it? Have you had these side effects? When is the best time to take it - with food, after food, or as I did, on an empty stomach?

I am slightly apprehensive of trying again, in case it was actually damaging my gut, - but would like to see my hair growing thicker again!!!

                              • I found your question re: side effects after experiencing some bad side effects personally, but it wasn't from ingesting DE- rather it was accidentally rubbing food grade DE into my arm. Because it is recommended as a mite killing poultry dust, I was putting down a layer in our chicken run. Some dust got on my arm, I also got bitten by either a mite or a mosquito, and then foolishly scratched my wrist before rinsing the dust off my forearm. Within a few hours my arm where I had scratched- an area of several inches became a deep red, painful, 5 inch by almost 2 inch, burnt feeling strip over my wrist, lasting 1 week now. I can only assume that the DE- which is essentially silica, the stuff glass is made from, had sharp particles which abraded my skin terribly. I dont think you should eat it to grow hair. Eat silica rich food like asparagus, instead.
Here is another person's info about silica.
“The thing with DE is that it does abrade biofilms but it also clogs cell ports, it also gets in the way of transporting your treatments to all your tissues. “

“Another danger is that people are tempted experiment with the use Diatomaceous Earth on themselves, and this is one of the worst things you can do.

“The people selling this stuff have mounted a large campaign to tell you that amorphous food grade DE is safe because it is not crystalline The way DE works is to scratch off the surface biofilm internally and to fill up the skins pores with tiny shards of broken glass. DE is silica, which is essentially glass.”

“Glass is amorphous , if you get a window from a 100 year old house you will find that the glass is thicker at the bottom of the pane because it flowed over the 100 years. That’s amorphous neither liquid nor solid, it doesn’t have an exact melting point.”

“But if you break that window it will still cut you. All silica whether it’s called amorphous or crystalline is sharp, that’s how it works, and those sharp edges get stuck in tissue. That is why silica migrates through the body very slowly , it cuts its way through.”

“Also your body doesn’t metabolize it. In the case of breathing it your lungs will isolate it as a foreign substance and grow tissue around it to protect you, this is called interstitial lung disease.”

“Silica also has severe immune system effects. Don’t be fooled it doesn’t matter if it is amorphous or crystalline all DE, read silica will hurt you. Your body can’t metabolize either kind of silica and there is always some crystalline silica in food grade DE. It also cuts through your GI tract which is how it has such negative effects on the immune system.”

                                http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2002-1...s/2002-129.pdf

                                http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/81-123/pdfs/0552.pdf

“Silica in the body is only safe if it is in molecular form, and then your should only absorb it through food. It shuts down the very transport that is cell function that allows your treatments to be conveyed to all your cells.”

If you must use DE internally, I like the post that suggests putting DE in water, drinking water off the top after waiting 3 days when the DE has settled to the bottom.
