  • A recent conversation with my internist

Doctor: Are you taking the statin like I suggested?

Me: No. I'm not feeling that....

Doctor: We don't want you walking around with these numbers!

Me: OK. You know I'm Paleo?

Doctor: Thats good. You still want to address these numbers and your cardiac risk. We should check your cholesterol profile again-I'm gonna put together the paperwork for labs.

Me: You gonna order a Vap Test?

Doctor: No, thats just academic stuff-we don't really need that; a basic lipid profile will work.

    ~He smiles. "It's just academic".

The last time that happened to me, I just smiled and asked for the strongest possible dose of statins he could prescribe. He had me on Simvistatin and Gemfibrozil. I threw them all in the trash and never called in for a refill. The reason for those strong pills: Triglycerides were 31, HDL 80, and LDL 110. He said my HDL was way too high, afterall, it had a little (H) next to the number. This was a Physicians Assistant, not a real doctor. This same PA also said Vit D doesn't matter and his has been less than 10 for years and he feels fine. I wrote up a critique on the PA and sent it in, never heard back--I guess he was just spouting hospital policy.

i wouldn't talk back to the doctors or write critiques. they will diagnose you with cancer in retaliation.

never. not much tv outside of a soccer game here and there.

it's just that we all know most doctors don't have your best interest in mind, and we also know they have a tremendous amount of power, so it follows that, if you threaten their power, they will act to secure it.

Why do you people even bother going to the doctor, when you don't have any faith in them?
Yeah, my grammar sucks. Deal with it!

many people in this land enjoy going to the doctor because this gives them something to talk about and live for. often, people will hope and pray for a chance to have a surgery, so that they can miss work. this is the culture.

I have some faith in them, but I usually go because I get a lot of concussions and lacerations.

I'm not so good at the self-stitching.
                    Durp.

I concur. Damn if I don't get alot of pretty scars from living ife! Otherwise I have to go to the doctor once a year for a physical to satisfy my health insurance.

                      any medications? no
                      any problemsin the bathroom? no
                      Any problems in the bedroom?no
then the regular talk about my bp being good and although my lipid numbers are 'borderline" he sees no reason to prescribe a statin with my general state of health.
The standard warning about my "diet" and there are grains without gluten I can eat morecarbsto support my activity....(shake head affirmatively to let him tell me what he thinks because I already let him know what I think)
then me saying "thanks doc, see ya next year and see how my numbers look then!" --runs out of office with the "health points" needed for my health insurance discount.
Integrity is what we do when nobody's watching.

Faith is for idiots. Doctor's aren't infallible and most of them suck anyway. I've seen over 20 physicians and specialist over the last 5-6 years of my life and I can attest to that personally. Most of them are ill-informed, don't keep up with the latest literature, and are too quick to hand out prescriptions and crap diagnosis's without looking into their patients conditions. Hell, I had one orthopedic who wanted to put me under the knife after my first office visit! Of course, experiencing muscular pain in my hands and wrists MUST have meant that I had carpal tunnel, and the ONLY solution to that is dangerous surgery.

If your doctor preaches to you about your health, find another doctor. If your doctor's hands you a prescription or advises surgery without trying EVERY alternative first, find another doctor. If your doctor ignores your opinion on what you think might be wrong with you, or something that you believe might be beneficial to your health, find another doctor. These types of people are idiots and quacks. The best doctors are those who listen to their patients first, admit that they really don't know everything, and put a decent level of doubt into what they are taught. The best doctors I've ever worked with were the ones who admitted first that they didn't know what was wrong with me, listened to my opinion on my condition and health and went from there.

Unless you have some extreme condition like cancer, any doctor who would dismiss a patient's choice of diet and a patient's choices to get off meds isn't a doctor worth having. My internist wasn't big on my guzzling saturated fat at first but recognized that I had researched my choice and told me to go for it. So far it's worked for me and so far she's on board.

That this list even exists tells us all so much.

The one thing I'm not looking forward to next year is that I'll have to find a new doctor.
I've been going to the campus health center where I have a doctor who is kind of an idiot, but is also a pushover.
"With your weight, we should test your cholesterol when we do the B12 and Vitamin D test" "Will they cover a VAP test?" "No" "Then don't bother" "if you're sure" "I'm sure." End of discussion, not brought up again.
"I've been having trouble sleeping" "Do you want a referral for a sleep study?" "No, Ambien for a few days usually does the trick" "here's a prescription" (gives me enough for a year)
                              I'm going to miss him.
