    Thanks for the link Misabi. I actually watched the whole show. Pretty interesting, although I had a hard time understanding some of the dialog because of the accent (j/k--interesting that show seems to be bilingual rather than running with a separate audio track.)

      Awesome program, thanks for the link.

      I know that Polynesian people tend to be quite 'big'... but, I was surprised by the high incidence of childhood obesity in NZ. Is this higher in the Maori population as compared to the white/Polynesian? Is there some cultural reason for that, or in the (Maori) diet in general?

          Yeah, the show's on the Moari TV channel which is dedicated to programming for the indigenous Moari people. Often the shows are fully in Te Reo (the Moari language), which is a shame as it does preclude those who can't understand it from watching/understanding what's being said. Sometimes there are English subtitles, but sometimes they are mixed language like this one. It's usually when they have people on who are good role models etc. for the peoples but they aren't fluent in Te Reo (like the presenters or guests).

            Like in most countries which have been colonised, the indigenous peoples tend to be in the lower socio-economic bracket and therefore their health levels are lower and obesity/diabetes rates higher. There is also a very large Polynesian population in NZ (I believe the largest Samoan community outside of Samoa is in South Auckland, NZ) and obesity is rife in most of the Polynesian communities in NZ and also from what I've seen in the islands now too. Many of the islands have switched from their traditional foods to processed and packaged food over the past 50 years or so and their people are certainly seeing the ill effects and from the people I've spoken to it's become really apparent to them over just the past couple of generations.
            This also goes for many of the people on other Pacific islands.

              This is also a good news piece from last year. A former All Blacks (the national rugby team) Captain Taine Randell decided to help fight the obesity epidemic hitting his home town: Randell's revolution - 60 Minutes - Video - 3 News

              The only pity is that the 'dietician' is claiming that the diet is good for them because of their blood type.

              Similar story to this one My Big Fat Diet from Canada.
              This is a poster made to give an overview of the study and its preliminary results, pretty cool!

                I loved this. I watched the whole thing. I am happy because I got my NZ fix now.

                Julianne's explanation of what the ancestral diet is and why we do it is one of the best I've seen yet.
