  • Protein makes bones frail?! What the what!

    As I was sitting tortuously through my pilates class nutrition lecture day, the teacher said protein should only make up 10-15% of calories and that too much can cause bone loss...Now I know this is hogwash, but I've never even heard that before. Was there some flawed study that "proved" this before or something? Anyone have any thoughts?

    Also, when she asked the class what the best source of protein was. I said:
    Me: Eggs.
    Her: Close....egg whites.
    Me: Oh, you gotta eat the whole egg!
    Her: Gives me weird look and continues with bull crap.

    Are you going there for pilates or nutritional advice?
    If I were you I'd skip their nutritional sessions, or you'll end up smacking your head against a wall during the class

      I have been reading about this today. There are some who believe that too much protein can prevent the body from properly using calcium. There is of course a minefield of conflicting ahem 'research'. Google it.
      Lost the weight using CW. Now I just want to be healthier.

        I'm doing it for my kinesiology degree. But thought it would be a nice addition to my weight lifting and hockey. There are some good things about it, but overall, I do not recommend pilates. I wish I could have skipped it, but we're having a test over it, so I have to know all the "right" answers.

        I feel so bad for everyone who takes it as gospel. I've considered giving everyone a card with marksdailyapple.com on it. Maybe at least a few people will give it a shot.

          Can't find a random, controlled trial exploring the effects of dietary protein on bone density, however a Google Scholar search turns up far more observational studies saying that protein positively associates with bone density than the opposite.

            I have heard a lot of conjectural type hoohah about the dangers of animal protein specifically: that the amino acids make your body acidic overall, and that the calcium in your bones is alkalizing and used to counteract the acidity from eating too much animal protein. Of course, this was all on a vegan propaganda website (notmilk.com I think?).

            I find it funny that people are so quick to vilify animal protein as potentially harmful when it's really the soda that everybody drinks that is killing the bones of America.

              This issue is really important to me. In the future to battle some health related problems, I may have to go on Hormone Therapy. For men some of the more serious side effects are muscle loss and loss of bone density. So thanks for bring this up.

              These are just a couple of things that I found in a very quick search:

              There were many more, but they almost all seem to say the same thing. Protein intake has a positive effect on BMD.

                Too bad college nutrition classes are all FULL OF SHIT & a total waste of time. You will have to unlearn nearly everything they tell you. Don't let them brain wash you with their BS. THE most important thing to prevent bone loss is Vitamin D3, and most folks need 10,000 IU Daily of Vitamin D3 Geltabs to get their blood level up to the required 70-100 ng/ml.

                  I always heard that the protein in dairy leaches calcium from your bones. but, never really looked into that.
