I vaguely remember this rant, and, yeah, he is right in the large sense. What I disagree with (and why I don't really like him, although I think he is right about a lot... though you should get your freaking kids vaccinated!), and I have the same problem with this site and even your post title, is that I'm not sure why "Big" makes something bad.
I don't think that there is some large conspiracy to keep Americans unhealthy so that the pharmaceutical industry can profit off of them. They don't work in tandem with the food industry in some nefarious plan. We eat poorly. We have problems. Many pills solve those problems. If we didn't eat poorly we wouldn't need those pills. But if Americans were suddenly all eating healthy the pharmaceutical industry would find other things to target. If we reach the upper limits of longevity, they will help us get older. If we reach the peak of our fitness, they will help us exceed it. And if we have a real medical issue, they will help cure it. Not because they're all moral and upstanding people (though, some of them are...) but because there is money to be made off of it.
"Big" pharmaceutical companies and "Small" pharmaceutical companies both have the same agenda. Make money. Stay in business. The smaller ones are more agile and so can adapt to changes in the culture (a paradigm shift in American health will be difficult for larger pharmaceutical companies to adapt to, though they eventually would or else they will just go away...) but the larger ones can sink the massive profits they make into testing for drugs to treat REAL DISEASES even though the odds are good that the trials will fail and the money will have just been burned.
Big is not bad and small is not good. They are different, and come with their own pluses and minuses, but they are not evil. Hell, their intent is to make drugs to keep people alive. They may be misguided at times and their motives may be suspect but they MAKE DRUGS TO KEEP PEOPLE ALIVE!!!
They deserve our scrutiny, as all things do, but they do not deserve our ire. They are trying to help people AND make a profit. Sometimes those two desires come into conflict. But compare that to what most people do for a living. Most people desire ONLY to make a profit. I find it odd that one of the few industries who's goal it is to help people gets so much crap thrown at them...
So, basically, I just can't stand the way Bill Maher laughs at his own jokes...
Haha I use the word big really loosely because with most it implies evil pharma, as thats what I see them as. Everyone has the right to their opinion though, and I respect yours just as my own. I posted the video because I like whenever I see people who are maybe not as health conscious, at-least to my knowledge, understand what was said in the video.
You probably know my opinion on the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, but it doesn't matter because neither of us should let each others opinions affect us negatively. I formed my opinions long before I came to this site, so I am not bandwagoning either.
Sometimes it brings people really down when they read articles or books, watch videos like this and "The world by Monsanto", ect... No one should let this stuff bring them down though, because the American people, more importantly the world, won't let a few corrupt, correction: corrupt and evil, people outperform the many good people in this world.
Don't take anything I say with any truth either, I want you to form and have your own opinions. I say what I say based on what I see, read, and make sense of. If you can't see the same thing I am seeing, whether "big" pharam and agra are evil or not, it does not make you wrong, or me wrong.
Spacecowboy, methinks you've been watching too many Big Pharma ads or something.
The pharmaceutical industry has long ago stopped making drugs to cure diseases. The money is in "lifestyle" drugs, and you know the most famous one. Incontinence is annoying but not life threatening. Ditto designer antacids. Flu vaccine isn't even made in this country anymore, not enough profit in it.
Thanks to the biggest lobby in Congress (six lobbyists for every senator!) and mostly, but not exclusively, Republican boot lickers, Medicare Part D pays list price for all pharms, no price negotiating is legal. (Unlike that darned "socialist" government health delivery system, the VA). The new HC legislation pending is another Big Pharma give away. Yet every national HC in the world negotiates prices with these same companies!
In the US, B.P. spends more on ads than research. Do you know who foots the bill for most of the pure research that eventually goes into that Purple Pill? We, the people. Taxpayer funded institutions.
When the drug industry starts caring about people instead of exorbitant profits again, I'll reevaluate. (PS, in the whole world, the most profitable industry is...............you guessed it, about 18% net after taxes.)
Honestly the older and more wise I get the more I realize how much corruption there is with companies promoting something that is supposed to "help". Funny how in America health care and drugs seem to be the biggest business, yet Americans are in worst shape/health than ever. I've been wanting to become a doctor, but in Traditional Chinese medicine. If you ask me, they've been doing it for thousands of years, and it's natural and oddly enough much better for you.
Doctors these days seem to be reps for these drug companies, whether they want to be or not. Today I was watching 'The Union', it's quite a documentary, which discusses the evolution of how Marijuana became to be. Needless to say, they mention how it's the one plant that has a TON of uses, and a TON of medicinal cures, yet it's not legalized because well you can't patent a natural cure. They even tried to make an artificial version of the substances found in MJ, so that they could patent it, and well profit.
Also, I might recommend watching Sicko, you may not agree with Mr. Moore's stance on a lot of things, but you can't hide the truth. Watching that video makes me seriously want to move out of the US, especially when our "leaders" clearly profit from all of this. I don't think it would be too far of a stretch to think that those in charge really do profit from the degradation of the health and wellness of the people.
