  • Is Tahinin ok ???

I was at whole foods and tasted the most delicious red pepper cashew spread .. I want to make it but it calls for tahini which is sesame seeds ground . I dont want to buy it if its not primal . i am working on losing so i wont eat a lot of it and you do use raw cashews, guess i could also try it with macademia nuts too. any advice appreciated Thanks!!

Unfortunately not, tahini is full of omega 6, so it's both inflammatory and likely to be oxidised (effectively rancid, predisposing to disease). Generally cashews are frowned on too combined with other nuts, partly because they're high carb but also omega 6, and they're technically seeds not nuts.

Did you read the Primal Blueprint? Cashews & Macs are Mark's favorite nuts.
Last I knew tahini was ok, b/c it's from seeds. We're down with seeds on primal, aren't we?

It's just a ground seed. Hunter-gatherers were down with seeds, I'm down with seeds. There's a whole lot worse I could get my paws into. I already eat cleaner than 99.5% of Americans, so I could really give a flying whup about <gasp> high O6 on occasion.

Apologies, I've come to MDA from another corner of the paleo world (Art De Vany generally minimises seeds because of antinutrients like lectins, and singles out cashews among nuts). The amount of omega 6 in tahini would be a concern to me regardless though. (Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Seeds, sesame butter, tahini, from unroasted kernels (non-chemically removed seed coat)).

Don't do that. Mark is not God; he's just a really intelligent guy who's organized a diet/lifestyle plan that works for many (but not all) people. Even Mark will tell you that the PB should be tailored to your own needs. Some people do well with a more plant-based diet, some do well with little to no carbs, some do well with lots of raw dairy, etc.

As far as tahini and raw cashews go, if you don't experience any weight gain, fatigue, sluggishness, or digestive problems after eating them, feel free to enjoy them. However, most nuts and seeds are just as problematic as grains and legumes, and eating lots of them over time can lead to the problems mentioned above. I really recommend soaking or sprouting them before eating them.

Allow me to cite the Primal Blueprint prayer which I wrote several months ago.

Our Father, who art Mark Sisson, hallowed be thy Primal Blueprint
The time has come. Thy plan be done, on all earth and kill CW.
Give us this day our daily bacon
and forgive us our 20% as we decry CW to others
Subject us not to grains or legumes
                            And thy Blueprint deliver us
                            Forever and ever
                            Amen

I wrote this one a while back:

                              Hail Bacon
                              Full of Grease
                              Mark Sisson is with thee
                              Blessed art thou amongst meats
And blessed is the fruit of thy sizzle, Drippings
                              Holy Bacon
                              Mother of Nom
                              Pray for us PBers
Now and at the hour of our dinner.
                              Amen.
