  • Gaining mass?

    Hello.

    I am a very skinny guy and have always been. My weight is 60 kg and I am 1.72 meters tall. I feel and need to gain some muscle and weight in general, being that skinny is not that cool sometimes.

    I have switched to primal since one month ago or something, but don't know if I am doing it right. I am eating pork meat, eggs, broccoli, letucce, tomatoes, carrots, apples, olive oil, things fried in lard, and some other fruits and greens. Sometimes I just feel like eating sweet stuff and things I used to eat like bread, however I don't. I dropped beer also, so I have been somewhat disciplined. However, sometimes I tend to feel hungry.

    Also I have planned to start going to the gym this week, 3 times a week to work with weights.

    So, please tell me how could I improve what I have been doing so far and what else should I add to this list, and anything you think you can help with.

    Do you eat sweet potatoes? If you're trying to gain weight, they will be your friend. Also, invest in coconut oil too if you haven't already. Do you have a weight training plan? Maybe give Strong Lifts or Starting Strength a try if you're just beginning. You're off to a good start!

      ^This. Sweet potatoes, white potatoes, white rice...you need carbs if you're trying to put on mass. Are pork meat and eggs the only sources of protein you're getting? You might also need to increase protein to build muscle, and not feel hungry.

        You must not start to lift the weights until you read the book, Starting Strength, or if you are poor, you must at least study the wiki and follow this program.

        Do not have fuckarounditis.

        And drink many gallons of milk, one a day or maybe 1.5 per day.

          I've found that I need the potato and fruit carbs to lift heavy, otherwise I just don't have any endurance. it also took me about six weeks to get over the cravings/dizziness etc so if it's only been a month just stick to it. You'll also have to eat a lot of calories to gain so just keep eating.

            +1. Great "how to" on form. I learned a ton from reading that.
            Although my weight lifting friends recommend Wendler 5 3 1 when it comes to choosing a program. I haven't tried it though.

              Your weight lifting friends have been lifting for a while, so what works for them (531) is probably too conservative for you if you are a beginner. Do SS for at least two months first, you'll be amazed by how fast you can get strong. Do it. Then you switch to 531 or some other plan when you're ready.

                I'll echo the comments of the other posters and say that you really do need some starches and heavy lifting to with help with the muscle building. In addition, Mark has posted the following articles that will be of interest:

                    While were on this topic, I'm trying to gain too. I was wondering if its possible to get to much Vit A from the sweet potatoes? Also...for economical reasons, would it be completely satanic and un-primal of me to supplement a little maltodextrin or waxy maize with the sweet potatoes after a workout? I'm finding it pretty hard to get enough carbs and my bill is starting to add up.

                    I get 120-160 grams of protein daily with over 100g of fat. I'm finding it hard to get over 100g of carbs though, and I'm thinking I might possibly need 150-200 on workout days.

                      What is so expensive about more sweet potatoes, or white rice? 2 cups white rice = 90 g carbs, other foods throughout the day will get you to 150 easily.

                        Thanks. I'll try to add some white rice. And obviously sweet potatoes are much cheaper than meat, but once you cook them they lose at least a 1/3 of their weight. Maybe I'll start sneaking some in the bakery oven while I shop to save a few bucks... I do have a bag of waxy maize sitting around though, so I may go ahead and finish it out.

                            pain =/= soreness. Pain means you hurt something and should be careful
