  • Quick Question on Pastured Piggy

So I was asking my farmer about how the animals are fed in the winter. The cows are kept fat and happy on hay, and he said the pastured pigs are fed grains year round.
Is that normal for pastured pigs? I'll be sad if I'm overpaying, cuz I haven't liked pork this much in... well, EVER!
So I guess they must be doing something right.

Where do the pigs live, are they free to roam and rotated? The farm I went to they had 2 acers to eat naturally (roots, bugs, vegetation, etc) however, they were still supplemented with organic feed as well.
    Primal since March 2011

I visited a big time organic farm and yes, they supplement their free range piggies with feed ( organic) in addition to liquid whey from their cheese making.

Unfortunately pastured pork and chicen are primariy Omega 6 .

This is why Dr. Kurt Harris who has coined the term Paleo 2.0 on his Archevore site recommends sticking with mostly ruminants.

Aw, but it comes with bacon and ham. I'm sad now.
We eat a lot of chicken and shrimp cuz they're inexpensive.

Goat is dirt cheap, a ruminant, and about as primal as it gets. I love shrimp but oily fish are better for your Omega 6:3 ratio.
