  • Holy Shit! Let's talk poop

    Hey guys,

my brother recently went to the doctor for poop problems. He isn't regular and the poops are hard and pebbly like rocks in a pond. His doctor told him to eat more fiber, and wa la, better poops.

Now, I've read a lot of conflicting information regarding fiber, and how to properly get your bowels in order. To me, it seems that a healthy gut population + enough fiber (which is most likely WAY less than what CW will tell you) is the fix.

I have the same problem as him, and have been trying to clean it up, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere.

I eat a stupid clean diet, 50% grassfed ground beef 35% raw/cooked vegetables (I try for a variety) and 15% fruit (pears are kicking it for me now, but usually strawberries).

Anyone have success with turning their poops around? Poop is an obvious test as to whether or not things are ticking in your body properly, and I want to get that in order.

(P.S. making my first bone broth today, super excited )

    Other factors for good poop:

    - Get enough exercise!
    - Don't drink and eat at the same time!
    - Drink enough water, and only between meals. (at least a 30min gap)
    - Don't over eat.
    - Don't under eat.
    - Try not combining heavy starches with fats (causes problems for some).

Personally, the amount of fiber I ingest certainly affects the composition, but it doesn't affect regularity.

        @Bosnic: I get enough exercise.

What's the reasoning behind the rest of the things you said? Bro-logic isn't really helpful.

I rarely eat heavy starches with fat, but why would that be an issue?

        @Grizz: Why?

I think the hard ones like that are hard to pass so I wouldn't add fiber (a drying agent) to the mix. I'd add fats and water, hydration things. Maybe it worked for your brother because he ate some juicy apples for his fiber source. Or maybe he drank more water. Or maybe I'm wrong. Try different things and see what works for you.

You can also take some magnesium, which hydrates the stool.

I'm not here to tell you how your body works btw, these are suggestions.

              - Water with meals dilutes stomach acid, leading to poorer digestion.
              - Same principle with overeating.
              - When you're hungry, and your stomach is growling, it's preparing for the meal to come. It's producing more stomach acid, etc. Thus, eat when you're hungry.
              - Heavy starches and fats are both tough to digest and require different digestive functions to take place. Some people experience problems because of this.

                The following have helped me:

*magnesium supplement (I take the magnesium titrate form - I think). Hoping to stop taking this after the container runs out & see how that works.
*vitamin C in the powdered form.
*drinking bragg's apple cider vinegar (a tablespoon or two) mixed with water a couple times a day (in between meals).

@Bosnic: Thanks for the clarification, much appreciation!

I think I overeat, gonna watch out for that one. Will also avoid drinking during meals, will wait 30 min or so.

@Sunnysara: I want to try messing around with what I eat before I start playing around with supplements for help. Magnesium is duly noted, though. (I also just bought some apple cider vinegar brags style so I may try that).

Regular probiotics make a huge difference for me. I like Mark's Primal Flora as well as the Renew Life Critical Care 50 Billion.

Also, a couple mugs of coffee in the morning usually gets me moving within the hour.
Today I will: Eat food, not poison. Plan for success, not settle for failure. Live my real life, not a virtual one. Move and grow, not sit and die.

Those were the 2 biggest things that improved my digestion. (on top of not eating bread, chips, corn, etc)

I have the same problem as well! My bowel movements are usually weekly and sounds like the same size/texture as yours. Although it rarely bothers me. I do notice when I do a lot of fasting I go even less (persumuably because I don't have as much waiste?). I've had this problem my entire life..although its barely bothersome. I exercise regularly... I've changed my diet many times. Sometimes I have water with meals sometimes I don't. I have had light/heavy meals.. I've done eat whatever you want, low fat low calorie, south beach, slow carb, and now primal...all of which for long periods of time.. high carb/low carb/ high fat/low fat/ high protein..including high fat greek yogurt daily for weeks....still not much difference. I do want to start taking magnesium/probiotics supplement.. I'll see if this makes a difference but I doubt it.

So only solution I've found is fruit...best raisins/grapes..second best berries...third oranges/apples/bannanas. Even then it just helps with the form they come in and only increases my movements to 2-3 times a week. Too bad I have to stop eating fruit for now till I get to my goal weight. There is one more thing I've noticed...on that time of the month my bowels are almost normal (4 times that week(if I'm not fasting)..and good size/texture). Hormones...

Same thing was happening with me and my diet is damn clean and I get about 45g of fiber a day.

One morning I decided to up my water intake.

I was already drinking about 64 ounces a day, which, to me was definitely enough, and it's not like I was ever THIRSTY to drink it, I just did.

Anyway, so when I got up at 5:15 to make the kids' and the Man Child's lunches, I was determined to polish off my 32oz water bottle BEFORE I "got"
                            to have my damn coffee.

                            THE HORROR!

                            So I did.

Not only did I have to "use the restroom" (my husband's euphemism for taking a crap.... and he's in there three times a day...sigh) within an
hour, but it did NOT feel like I was giving birth outta my rear (sorry!), AND, I went twice more in the hour after that!

So that day I ended up drinking a gallon of water.

I went to bed that night thinking: "oh man, I'm going to be up peeing ALL NIGHT".... cuz I'm usually up FIVE times with just my 64oz of water, but yanno what? I was only up twice and I slept like a freaking LOG. A LOG I TELL YOU!

                            That's unheard of in itself.

Also, another side benefit, was the fact that I didn't have to put eye drops in my eyes when I *did* get up to pee like I ALWAYS DID BEFORE (yes, every five times) because my eyes were so dried out and they felt like they had sand in them.

So after I got over the initial shock that I, Julie *********, need a GALLON or more of water a day to function "properly", I've embraced it and
drink my 32oz refillable water bottle of water 4 times a day.... first thing in the morning, and then one before each meal.

Usually eat about 1/2hr to 45minutes after each bottle of water.

                            Anyway, that's my long-winded story.

                            Julie

p.s. another way to get the water down if you're not just hangin' 'round the house all day like I am.... well, when I'm not... say I'm going to target
or something, i fill up the bottle, go to target, shop for the mindless things I need and then my "contest" is to drink the whole bottle by the time I get home. That way the bathroom is waiting for me when I have to pee and I suck the water down lickety split... well, since Target is only a mile from my house, so I gots to drink fast!

Anyway, good luck with finding what helps you!
