  • Does hydrolyzed whey protein have MSG on it?

I know that hydrolyzed vegetable protein is one of those things to watch out for, but what about whey protein? Same shit?

Yup. All hydrolyzed * proten = potential source of msg.

It may not have MSG added directly to it in MSG form, but it does have "Free Glutamic Acid", which is the same thing. Many people poo-poo this fact, but when you dig into it, it is not something you want in your diet.

Yeah I just threw all of it away. I've had it in 4 separate occasions and it gave me stomach ache every single time.

Do you ever buy chicken or beef broth (or stock)? I noticed yesterday at the store that a lot of the cartons say, "No MSG Added". That is way different than "MSG Free".

No, there is no "MSG" added to whey protein. Yes, Hydrolyzed whey contains free glutamic acid along with other amino acids, but then again, so do all sorts of foods containing protein.

Why is it that the groups decrying the evils of refined "MSG" are often at the same time ignoring or even encouraging the consumption of "natural" foods loaded with Glutamate, and traditional long cooking methods that encourage free glutamic acid?
(find me an anti-MSG crusader that's equally against aged cheeses, homemade beef or bone stocks, stewed tomatoes, or broths made from seaweed, fish or mushrooms)
