  • Rice vs Quinoa

    For someone who needs extra carbs, which do you recommend? I've been eating some quinoa lately, but my body doesn't seem to digest all of it... So perhaps rice is more easily digestible? If so, white or brown rice?

    I think rice is probably the least innocous. Quinoa has saponins which can punch holes in the gut (per Robb Wolf, anyway).

        Definitely not quinoa -- especially if you follow Robb Wolf. Plus, I think it smells weird.

        White rice is the recommended version for Primal (tho it is not primal -- if Grok saw rice it would not have been polished!)

        But, the bran has anti-nutrients and white rice is a pretty innocuous starch. Still, I'd rather have sweet potato or maybe some jicama for crunch.

          half cup of oats, and low fat wheat toast, with low fat butter works best for me....

            I do a lot of sweet potatoes, which are my preferred carb, and white rice about once a week--I usually get all-you-can-eat sushi after my Friday workout.

            Working for me as refeed food so far.

                go Organic Hulled Barley instead of rice if you have to.

                  I eat sprouted brown rice and sprouted quinoa all the time. If you haven't been eating starches or grains, your body might take a week or two to properly adjust. I digest them both perfectly now. If you're not sprouting them, however, you'd be better off choosing white rice.

                      I found this. Bryan, the site author, disagrees with Wolf's conclusions about saponins/quinoa. I'm new to this and unsure who is correct.

I can tell you that sweet potatoes will rip my gut up, but I can eat a boatload of white rice with little consequence. It's higher GI, but if you're looking for post-workout recovery, that's what you want.

                        Try them all and see what works for you. I love doing a mix of oven fries made of white and sweet potatoes, but cilantro-lime rice with pico de gallo is amazing, too!

                          I agree, my body doesn't seem to handle potatoes as well as it handles rice.

                            By soaking and rinsing quinoa before cooking it, you'll get rid of the saponins. I didn't develop the really painful symthomps of leaky gut until I started eating quinoa daily. I believe it contributed to my already developing leaky gut at the time.
