  • Weight loss stalled because...???

    Hey primal friends!

I need some serious input here. I am 23 years old female and 5'2" ~135lbs currently but started out at 139lbs. I've been primal for about 3 weeks now and HAD been a vegetarian/pescetarian for 12 years up until 2 weeks ago when I decided that I needed to get off my over-processed soy products for good. So far so good with returning to the carnivorous side (see my journal for more info on that!) and haven't had any carbs - except for alcohol which I've kept limited to the weekends and to beer or wine (can't escape the beer as my bf and I homebrew).

The first week I lost 6 pounds but then quickly put "weight" back on though I could tell from how my clothes are fitting that its all muscle that I've gained since I am able fit into my skinny jeans for the first time in years. I must confess to a bit of a scale obsession. I am one of those people that NEED to see results otherwise I tend to become depressed and feel guilty as though I haven't been trying my hardest.

I've been working out a lot more than I used to and have implemented IF and sprints into my weekly plan. I work at a restaurant so I run around a lot there (though not as a waitress since we're a fast-casual joint), so moving around at a steady pace is not an issue for me as I work there 5 days a week. I have been sprinting at least once a week and have done a full IF day at least once a week and sometimes will do a half IF day and just eat a small dinner. As for exercises, I've been trying to keep it varied by working out on our TotalGym and doing a lot of floor exercises at night while watching TV (lunges, squats, sit-ups, push-ups, etc.). I feel like I've totally changed my exercise habits since I used to be very sedentary before getting my second job as I was an office manager and would sit at my desk for most of the day, 5 days a week.

As for my sleep, I've always suffered from insomnia for as long as I can remember. It drives my bf crazy cuz I never feel like I'm tired and will lie in bed tossing and turning for hours. I've started taking melatonin to help me get some rest, which has seemed to be working. Last night, after taking it around 10:30, I was feeling tired and actually got into bed and fell asleep before midnight. The downside to taking the melatonin is that its been making me sleep for 9-10 hrs and making me hit the snooze button and oversleep quite a bit.

As for stress, which I know someone will ask about, I'm a student and working 2 part-time jobs. I'm usually pretty good about making some time for myself to just relax, but of course, things always come up. Plus, when you're as busy as I am, stress is just kinda "part of the job".

Another thing I'd like to mention is that ~3 months ago I switched my birth control from the NuvaRing to Mirena (an IUD), which was great at first since my flow became very short and light. However, since starting the primal diet AND starting to eat meat again, I've been on my flow for ~3 weeks now. The doc said that since switching to the IUD that it would become sporadic and could last longer than usual. I'm just unsure right now whether it is lasting for so long because of the drastic change in my diet, or if its just the change in birth control to blame.

So I'm so confused and getting frustrated and don't know what to blame for not losing more weight/fat. I feel like I haven't lost any fat off my body in the last two weeks, since the fit of my clothes have not changed since the initial week. Any suggestions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Keep doing what you're doing & your scales & the fit of your clothes will catch up.

It can take anything from 6-12 months before everything settles down on the Mirena.

Magnesium citrate supplements have done wonders for my sleeping pattern.

How so? I looked it up and all I could find was that it was used as a laxative. How does it promote sleep??
