  • Cold Cuts

Hey guys. Basic question - yay or nay on the cold cuts? I'm talking about the kind you'd get at the butcher's counter at a supermarket like Price Chopper. They're just so convenient to add to a meal or have as a high protein snack (right? i'm new, so correct me if i'm wrong!)

    Thanks,

    Aaron

I usually get a pound when I do my weekly grocery shopping because it's hard to eat anything other than finger foods at work, and it's easy to pull a mouthfull off when I'm hungry. But I'm very careful about the ingredients. They're definitely not all alike. If you ask the person at the counter, they can show you the label. If they can't be bothered, I wouldn't shop there anyway.

Having said that, I wouldn't use deli meats as my primary source of protein. I think of it more as a snack food. Even the best are less than optimal.

First off, I'd make them myself.

Second, they have a ton of chems and grains in them as filler/stabilizer. Additionally, they taste like ass.

I try to find some with the least amount of crap for quick, easy, school lunches for the kids, but keep it to a minimum. They end up with cold-cuts maybe once every two weeks.

I get a two-pound package of pastrami every time I go to Costco just 'cause it tastes so good. Split 3-ways (me, hubby, son) I figure a package every few weeks won't kill us. Tastes really yummy thrown between a couple of cold fried eggs with mustard for a quick "sandwich".

I'll have to check the label again. Didn't occur to me they would add grains to it, but I'm pretty sure it's all meat.

edited to add: Here's the nutritional label. Not too bad: http://www.columbussalame.com/produc...liced-pastrami

Ah okay. I went to school in Central Mass and there was Price Chopper out there. Didn't know they have them in New York!

I thought the same thing. Reminded me of college in Worcester and 3am runs to the 24 hour PC.

I know this thread is old, but I thought I'd respond to it anyway. I just found some cold cuts that are not only primal, but they're delicious: Fresh Retail Organic Meats and Frozen Retail Organic Meats. I bought them at a local grocery store, but you can also order online. I love adding a little Paleo mayo to to it, and rolling it up. Perfect post-workout snack for me.
