  • bacon frenzy..... why?

I've been reading Paleo/Primal sites for about a month, and I cut out most of the carbs.

Why is there such a frenzy about eating huge amounts of bacon? It just seems so.... unnecessary.

Most of the bacon available in stores has a lot of crap in it. Sugar, nitrates, etc.

    Am I missing something?

heh.. I played out the bacon and eggs for breakfast in about 4 weeks... Who doesnt eat breakfast anymore??? This guy haha.

On the other hand I think of the bacon as a metaphor for just meat and fat...

uhm, it's neat to "fight the man" and the man's desire to tell you bacon is bad for you. It's a knee-jerk reaction akin to a juvenile rebellion, and it's effing tasty, so shut up and nom more swine stomach!

Yes (you are missing something) - most primal folk don't sit around eating bacon. It's an amazing occasional treat if you can find it without all the extra junk added. It's just kind of a meme that goes under its own momentum. Don't feel like you ought to be eating it.

I think that some of go through a bacon phase. I fixed it more frequently when I first turned primal then abandoned it due to it's piss poor fat to protein ratio and the assorted crap that goes into it. Now, I'm not afraid to use it in some way in cooking once in a blue moon but it's not a stable food and I don't recall the last time I had any.

Oh GAG!!! That alone would do me in!

For me, bacon is more a metaphor. Although I love it, it is simply too expensive for me to eat daily. We do tease at home though and use it as a verb. My daughter came in while I was making burgers and simply said "bacon it mom!" and off it goes in our house. lol

You should have seen the looks I got at a brunch when I ran bacon under the chocolate fountain at the dessert table. I didn't see any "fruit only" signs!

Heh, one thanksgiving I brought some of my most recent batch of home cured stuff to a friends who then proceeded to freak out when he saw the nipple (I leave the skin on), he HAD to eat the nipple. I crisped it up just nicely, and spent the next half hour listening to him exclaim about how tasty and delightfully chewy the bacon and the nipple were.

                        Ha! That sounds delicious!

I love bacon, and don't feel guilty about eating it (I buy uncured, nitrate-free), but the reality is that I usually just eat it once a week. Even then, I cook a couple slices so I can fry some sweet potatoes and onions in the bacon drippings. Best. Breakfast. Ever.

You're very right about the sweet potato breakfast, that's almost exactly how I have it.

I don't eat that much bacon, but that's because I buy bottom-of-the-barrel, reject bacon nobody should be eating anyway, so i have to watch myself.

I take it as a metaphor also. We do eat a good amount of bacon here because it is filling for my kids. But, it is 2-3 slices at a time. Nobody is eating a pound of it everyday.

For me Eat More Bacon = don't be afraid of fats and proteins and that feeling of freedom when you realize that they are GOOD for you.
