  • Unexpected oral surgery - not prepared food-wise. Need ideas!

    So I went in for a dental exam on an infected tooth (I knew it needed to come out) and we decided to just do the extraction.

    Now I need to eat soft foods for the next couple days. I'm so annoyed at myself because I skipped grocery shopping this week (been feeling VERY under the weather because of the infection pain) and I'm not prepared ahead of time with soft foods.

    So - ideas? I have a head of cauliflower in the fridge I'm going to cook and puree with butter, maybe add some potatoes. I'm mainly concerned with protein, since I can't really chew meat. I do have protein powder so I can make shakes if necessary. I'm supposed to be on mostly bedrest, well as much as I can get with 2 toddlers since I'm pregnant and the surgery turned out to be a little more invasive and trouble than what was anticipated.

    Hugs...that doesn't sound nice!

    Don't suppose you have any bones to hand to make broth? That with maybe an egg stirred through would be great for you. Or just scrambled egg. Yogurt...if you do dairy other than butter.

    Hope you manage to rest as much as possible.

      Eggs for sure, and whatever dairy suits you. Could you make soups? Even if you only have hamburger at home you can make a broth and that will give you some protein too. If you have a baby food mill at home from your toddler (or a food processor) you could probably zap some meat up pretty fine - the texture would be a little unappetizing, but it might hold you through a tough spot til you feel a bit better. Use the protein powder too - it is not massively primal, but you want to keep your nutrition up as best you can.

        Yeah, I think eggs are going to be your best friend for a while. Maybe some greek yogurt if you're doing dairy. Acorn squash cooks up pretty easily and can get soft, especially if you toss some butter in the middle. Dr Bork has a really great way to cook it up with butter and cinnamon.

          I just got a tooth pulled today, too. I'm sipping a smoothie as we speak--berries, almond butter, and milk. (I was unfortunately out of coconut milk, because I didn't grocery shop either!) I'm thinking later I'm going to do some scrambled eggs, and I also have tilapia, which I think might be soft enough for tomorrow. The pureed cauliflower sounds good, and maybe meatloaf or chili? I think anything made with ground beef should be okay.

          Good luck! We only have to get through a few days like this.

              Thanks guys Great ideas. I just took a couple hours nap. I do have a roast in the crockpot for dinner so there should be a good amount of broth from that, but the regular bone broth sounds really really good right now. If there's not much left I might make some more, I think I have a couple beef bones in the freezer. I'm also debating thickening the drippings with some tapioca starch for a gravy to use with the mashed cauli. And I do have laying hens so plenty of eggs.

              I'm really hoping the beef for tonight will be well cooked enough to really cut up fine, because it's a big enough roast that it will last through tomorrow as well. It will end up being in there for about 10 hours so I think it might... we'll see. Just the last few days I've been hurting so much that I haven't eaten much, mostly milk (now we're out), protein shakes, some peaches cut up really small and soft cooked rice & broccoli.

                If you happen to have any gelatin in the pantry, I would make some jello. You can make it all kinds of un-sweet ways like I make a tea/lime juice blend that I call edible tea. Or you can make it savory with broth as the liquid.

                    protein fluff!
                    Oh and check out my recipe for key lime protein pudding in the recipe forum. I was having a lot of dental work done over the last month or so and often fell back on homemade protein pudding

                      I'm having dental surgery again next Tuesday ... will be out 3-3.5 hours ( full anesthesia ). The last one scheduled on the 27th. I know I will be asleep for most if not all of Tuesday, but I plan to cook cauliflower to smush, also a roast with some nice veggies (onions, squash, shrooms) that will go into the food processor, make a meat salad/pate type thing, also keeping plenty of boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, maybe an egg white protein shake ...
                      Had a longer one in December (totally under for 7.5 hours) - and even drinking water was a trial. After the first week I ate grits and coconut manna ....
                      Not fun
                      Everything's shiny, Cap'n. Not to fret.
