    Ok ok

    I think I can finally admit it. I'm all over the map on paleo/primal/slow carb/carb cycling stuffs

    I admit it.

    Every single time I think I've finally wrapped my head around it, I read something else, and it rocks the foundation of whatever I'd thought was definitely totally the way to eat.

    breads=non paleo, non primal. they're processed, they're bad.

    fruit is ok in smallish doses on either paleo or primal. they're natural. grok might have a "daily apple" or a handful of blueberries, no worries.

    So I take a look at glycemic index, and glycemic load charts, and I see all this gluten free bread stuff and plenty of "no" list carb stuff with fairly low glycemic index/low/carbs numbers as compared to my "daily apple".

    There's something that I'm not mathing right, right?
    There's something missing from the equation?
    Something quantifiable?

    Because the math seems so say, I should just have a friggin sandwich for lunch, and not eat the apple.

    I know that's wrong. Someone please tell me why that's wrong?
    Isn't the Robb Wolfe/Sisson/other random MD thing seems to be about insulin, and shouldn't the math/science support the low carb bread and not the apple/berries/and great-caesar's-ghost-not-a-banana?

    Am I the only one that feels like a complete noob on this caveman diet stuff, even after weeks/months?

    Just getting frustrated.
    Ironically, primal seems to work for me. It's really the carb cycling that sent me into a tizzy. And now I'm rethinking the whole shebang. Bah.

    Shoot for minimal processing in your food- cooking should be about it, really. Overly-processed foods are not usually good for you. Anything that needs to be "processed" should be done as close to home as possible (buy your meat/sausage from a local butcher if possible).

      I think the glycemic index messed you up.
      Eat meat, good fats, lots of veggies, and some fruit. Avoid grains, processed sugars, soy, and legumes. The rest is fluff. Don't overthink it.

        I'm gonna make this really simple.
        bread is made from grains. grains contain lectins. lectins are bad. no grains for you.

            These responses were awesome. It's so true. The glycemic index stuff broke my brain for a while.

            I've said it before- this forum is a great place. I only know one other guy trying for a cavediet and he just does whatever crossfit tells him. Every now and then I get a barrage of questions. I stay somewhat aloof about it but it really is mostly as simple as "don't eat processed crap", isn't it?

            Hard to argue with.

            Maybe I'll relax about the rest for a bit.

            Feels like there's a lot of debate from the ancestral health symposium and other places, with a lot of disagreement.

            Maybe the "don't eat processed crap" is an easy foundation. The 80% 20% was pretty easy to maintain too. Started to fixate on macronutrient ratios and such. Seem to be so many schools of thought on the carb cycling and the fat protein amounts and such.

            Maybe just need to relax about finding "The Right Way" and just play around with it and see what works best for me.

            How do you all deal with the massive amount of information and the fairly significant controversy? It boggles my mind that some as basic as "the best way to eat" seems such an unresolved question by science

              I also find myself constantly intrigued by the fine details of dietary intake. But I try hard not to get stressed about it, because stress will make me sick just as quickly as eating the wrong food. I try to keep my body on its toes by changing out my main meat every week. Last week I had oysters every day for lunch, this week it's mackerel. But I know that, overall, I'm miles ahead of Joe Cheeseburger. My mountains of veggies, scoops of fat, and chunks of meat are the best thing for me, even if they aren't PERFECT. Even if you had exact numbers in front of you, they might not apply because your body is not my body. I have salmon for dinner almost every night, and feel pretty good about that. My body likes fishy food more than red meats. I don't know why, but even grass-fed beef doesn't satisfy me the way a chunk of fish can. So that's what I eat, and it feels great. If something goes wrong, I'll let you know. Until then, I'm enjoying life!

                Look at the nutritional values of a slice of bread and an apple. Roughly same calories, but apple is full of vitamins and minerals, bread not so much. I try to eat non-processed, vitamin packed foods and it works for me.

                  Wise words, all.

                  It just seems so insane to me that there can be so much debate about "what's best".
                  We've had our bodies for thousands of years, and we've had the scientific method for more then, well, 5 years.
                  Seems like this stuff should be pretty ironed out by now.

                  But I suppose, it IS all fairly complex.
                  This thing almost killed me.

                      Well, there is a "best way to eat" in the opinion of everyone here, and that's Primal. No controversy at all! You said it yourself: "don't eat processed crap". Or to put it better: "Eat natural, whole foods".

                      If you just stick to that, things can be nice and simple.

                      Buuutttt... if you want an absolutely-positively-perfectly-super-duper-best way to eat... well, that's where things will get confusing and different opinions and controversy will begin to appear. This is because, when you get down to the super-detailed level of tracking macros, micros, meal timing/frequency, etc, none of us are exactly the same in terms of how we'll respond, and we all have different goals to boot. What works best for one of us may mean disaster for another. At that level it's all just individual experimentation. But really, the only reason people go to this extreme in their analysis is to try to get a specific result (usually quick fat loss). They're trying to hack the program for a quicker route to their goal.

                      If you just want to be healthy, live long, and be as stress free as possible, then don't get into it at this micro-level. Backup to the original perspective: "eat natural, whole foods... not processed crap". As long as you're doing that, you're eating well!

                        +1 Well said. Need to just remember this and not get so stressed trying to remember all the macro information.
