  • Is raw cream safe?

    Just wondering if anyone has become ill from drinking raw cream? I wanted to buy it to use in my coffee, but got a little freaked out by the giant warning and release of liability label on the bottle. Is it actually dangerous?

    Probably not dangerous. Alot of raw dairy, just to comply with state health codes that are far more strict regarding raw dairy (if allowed at all in the state) essentially ensure that raw dairy is *safer* than regular milk. But the producer can't say any such thing and from a safe cya legal standpoint pretty much has to tell you the party line from the government about the dangers of raw dairy (that existed 100 years ago when there were no standards). Hence why you get all those warnings.

    I have been drinking raw milk the past week. I figure the extra cream within the milk, as well as the protein, will moderate the milk sugars.

      I had some raw milk last month. It was delish.
      That said, SHUT UP AND HAVE SOME CREAM!

        I have dairy goats, and we drink the milk raw. The previous poster is exactly right about the state laws and labels and government hooha.

        That said..... know the source of your milk and cream. Find a local producer. :-)

          I drink raw milk and use it to make homemade kefir. No problems but my brother, who works for Cabot Creameries thinks I'm nuts. I grew up drinking raw milk.

            My wife is from a family of dairy farmers. All of the kids drink the milk out of the tank, and now several of the nieces and nephews do too.

            The only reason to pasteurize the milk is if the farm or cows are dirty and diseased. Why do you think milk has to be pasteurized?

              I love, love, love raw cream from grassfed cows. Make sure to check in to the source -personally I would only drink from cows that were exclusively grass-fed.

              However, it is possible to get sick even when purchasing from a great source. Several people became ill from campylobacter from the farm where I got raw milk. No one had any long term issues, but it is always a possibility.

                My local raw dairy farmer (there are a few actually) makes it a point to show every new customer how she milks the cows and checks for disease. She tests each and every cow each and every morning. Mass commercial producers of store milk apparently don't do this. If she gets a hint of disease that cow not only doesn't get milked (or at least its not sold) but she sends samples off to a lab for analysis to find out whats wrong.

                This is why its important to know where you are getting the milk from.

                  also, are you immunocompromised? if you are then raw milk is not a risk you should take. otherwise, see the above comments.

                    I was going to buy it from Sprouts the brand is Organic Pastures, anybody have any info on them?

                      I am sooooo jealous of you people out in Cali. I wish I could just walk into a grocery store and pick up a big ol bottle of raw cream.

                        My husband and I buy raw dairy from an Amish farmer co-op and have been doing so for about a year. It is delicious and we've had no problems at all. As a matter of fact, we picked up a gallon yesterday. I sat it in the refrigerator to separate and nearly a third of the gallon was cream. Yum.

                          It sickens me that raw milk is called "raw milk", whatever just happened to it being called "milk"? Having grown up on a farm, it's all I ever drank.

                            I think that's what made me nervous, the word 'raw' sounds so...gross! They should just call pasteurized milk 'cooked milk' or maybe just 'poison' if that's easier
