  • Bad mood since going Primal

Since going primal, my mood has been pretty bad. I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not (I have a history of mental illness). I was wondering if anybody had a similar experience and could give me some advice for what worked for them. Thanks!

Possibly carb flu. Make sure you're getting sufficient protein and particularly fat in your meals and by implication enough calories.

Give it a week or so and see if you've improved.

I have a history of getting pissed off. Since switching to this method of eating/living I'm calmer, nicer to be around, and I've reintroduced filtering to my daily conversations. My colleagues no doubt appreciate it.

Try eating a spoonful of coconut oil when your mood or energy goes down. The increased fats should give you instant energy.

Cream has become a staple as well, it's a little easier to stomach than a spooful of oil.

I would agree with that but since I'm doing the leptin reset, the oil works better with that.

Really wish I knew what that meant. Go for it though!

There you go. I've been primal since January, but my body is FINALLY changing in ways I hadn't of imagined.

When I was eating low carb primal, my mood was horrible as well. I stuck to it to make sure it wasn't carb flu, but my mood never improved until I added in more carb sources such as sweet potatoes, carrots, squashes, berries, etc...I also believe I have a mild bipolar tendency, and low carb really brings it out, but my mood is WAY better and more stable eating around 100-150 carbs per day, with a little less fat. For fats i usually do avocados, fish, and cook with coconut oil. Also, try supplementing with 5HTP and vitamin C. 5HTP helps with serotonin levels.

You haven't mentioned how long you've been doing PB. A lot of people tend to get really cranky when their bodies need an increase in blood glucose (my wife is one of them). You need to stick it out for a few weeks to give your body time to adapt to burning fat rather than carbs. If you start giving in and feeding yourself carbs you will only prolong the adaptation process, which is often known as "carb flu".
Good luck, and stick with it.

I've had the exact opposite effect. Much better mood. But some good advice in the thread if I need it.
