  • How can i make my Mum stop the diet cokes?

She's been a prolific diet coke drinker for decades now! She knows it's bad, but she won't get off the crack. She is 60, very lean, VERY active(on her feet moving from sun up to sun down, literally), does not eat particularly much and what she does eat is crap(rice cakes/crackers ffs ), but the coke is probably really having an effect. I don't want to be looking after some demented woman in 30 yrs after the aspartame has ravaged her cognitive apparatus, no thank you very much.

I know you cannot make anyone do anything, other than by gun point, but how do you coerce really stupid people into making better choices?

Have her watch "the bitter-sweet truth" or something such as that on youtube.

condition her to associate pain with diet coke by beating her whenever she's drinking one.

/in b4 board backlash re: "really stupid people"

    I love this place.
I used to seriously post here, now I prefer to troll.

They won't unless something life threatening happens to them, or someone they love. Even then it may not help. My grandfather grew up smoking cigarettes, cigars, and drinking like a sailor. Around the age of 65 he started to have heart failure, and his kidneys were shutting down. He now has to go to dialysis 2x a week for the rest of his life at the age of 72. He looks horrible, and you know what...? This weekend he was smoking yet another cigarette, and drinking a beer. Stupid.

seconding iniQuity's suggestion about pain association.

I went that route with a programmer friend and kept putting thumb tacks in his redbulls. He now hates thumbtacks.

That's slightly medieval. I was considering more an electric collar, where i can 'zap' from a distance with a remote control, thus removing the son-is-a-torturer association.

Your motivation for her stopping the diet coke is a personal one and nothing to do with her health - you just don't want to be stuck looking after a demented woman. You can always just throw the woman into a nursing home. Anyway she's a stupid person (your words) and not worth any more discussion!!!!

I don't know. Perhaps some deep introspection will help. What would coerce you? Oh, wait, you're the selfish prick, it's your Mum that's stupid. What a family.

Then again, maybe she's not stupid, maybe she's trying to drink herself into an early grave because she's despondent about her child rearing failure.

She probably regards it as her one and relatively harmless vice - does she drink booze or smoke? You've already said she's lean and active when many people her age are either dead or lying in front of the TV stuffing their faces.

So I'd back off. Make sure there's plenty of alternative choices such as a natural sparkling mineral water with a twist of lemon available in the fridge, and other than that, back the hell off.

No need to be mean about it guys.

OP: If she knows it's 'bad' than it's probably a comfort thing for her at this point. When you get older you're pretty set in your habits and feel like it's too late to change anyway.
Maybe try to replace it with something else? Offer to make her some ice tea or something instead, and ask her to try that when she feels like coke.
There's a little caffeine in there and some sweetness to wean her off.

Easy. Print up some stickers to put on each can. :/:/:/:Warning: Drinking this exact can of strange fluid subtracts approximately 10 minutes from your life. Enjoy:/:/:/:

I'm with Nion - have alternatives handy. Stuff like sparkling water, flavored with natural lemon or lime, herbal iced tea or something. Sure, she needs to know how bad it is for her, but once you've told her in a very nice and calm way without getting excited or preachy, then all you can do is be a good example and have other drinks available.

She's a grownup and is legally allowed to make her own decisions.

Sounds like she is fairly healthy to me, and has damn good genes to boot. Pray that you have her genes, and be thankful that her deadliest vice is diet coke. Love her and enjoy the moments and don't sweat the rest.
