  • Diet Coke + Roast?

Just did a recipe involving pork roast, a packet of onion soup mix and a can of diet coke in a crock pot. The pork was TEN-DER - fell off the bone. But still, it includes diet coke. Bad? Indifferent?

I find that fall off the bone tender is more a product of time and low heat. For that I just put a pork roast or a chuck roast in the crock pot and let it ride "low and slow" all day. No extra flavorings necessary.

I'd say falls under the 80/20 rule.

If your stomach can digest the fake sugar, and it didn't taste sweet, you hopefully by passed the "fake sugar" insulin spike, and avoided the extra calories.

You could put anything in there and get the same result but possibly with better taste. Diet sodas are at the bottom of my list to ingest.

Yeah, I think I'd pass. I just don't like the idea of eating factory-made "food."

Pre-primal, I had meats cooked in coke, and it didn't taste bad at all. Now my tastes have changed. Just some meat and some fire is all I need- lol.

we've not always had good success with pot roasts in the past, so I was excited the diet coke worked. I'd be glad to use something else (wine?) if the meat stays tender.

FYI, we're dropping a 6-lb. behemoth hunk of beef into a deep dish electric skillet tonight. Using the basil/thyme/garlic/red wine recipe. Wife keeps sticking more cloves in there and yelling BAM...

That sounds like a good recipe dix. As far as the crockpot you might do some google searching but I'm thinking maybe some cheap beer. The thing with diet soda is JUST SO MUCH fake stuff. I mean, it HFCS is more natural.

                  Dixon,

Try this one. It works without the cornstarch just as well :-D

Beware, the tannins in red wine can actually dry the meat out, so use more of a splash/glug than the whole bottle

Beer, cider, white wine also worth a try (depending on meat)

Roast / pulled pork is delicious with some beer or bourbon. Just not too much or it may dry it.
